The full title is The Marriage of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein. It is written by Edward Einhorn whom I have never heard of but who is a somebody in New York. It is a bit odd, a bit meta but very well presented, superbly acted and quite entertaining. It is on til 16th. Not full this afternoon so I reckon if you have nothing on and are in that part of town , have a look. ( if you saw the Woody Allen Gertrude Stein parts of his movie set in Paris, then you’ll have an inkling. )

Have to agree with some of the above. One thing that puzzles me: why does the spurned lover follow them around etc. surely if they had planned to bump off the heiress then they could have waited til they had settled into their country estate and she could have choked on a bone, fell off a cliff, had accident rising, been cut with a kitchen appliance etc etc. I’m just not into the plot. And the Suchet makes it much clearer how it was done. The paint thing doesn’t wash ( see what I did there?) In the Suchet we have nail polish, referred to in this one, pointlessly.

I love the fact that he is going to be onstage throughout. . Of course he is. At his age you like to sit down and stay there, not bob about. I hope they serve him a cuppa or something stronger while he has a good time, acting ..

I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere but I’m wondering if hair is a particularly sensitive thing in Hollywood/America? Is it the only part of a face or body that invites comment in this way? I’m thinking how Black styles provoke comment and often censure, a kind of prejudice. Is there something else underlying a comment on hair and/or the lack of it? He couldn’t have said anything else about her looks, could he? So does hair represent something, power (Old Testament Samson’s story, v old, very potent) in a away that is difficult to express. Just musing….

The thing is that we have always seen the political alliances played out in this competition for better or for worse so why not embrace them now when it would mean something?

Did anyone watch the screening? I flicked over, my housemate who loves the play said,"What on earth is this?" And we changed channels again. I wished I could have changed channels in the theatre too. The costumes were silly, overpowered the actors who were fighting them most of the time. And mismanaged with the glorious glam gold dress wasted in a scene , should have been the last scene which was all glammed up of course, a climax as it were and more subtle stuff gradually developing over the course of the play. The designer obviously had no idea about the play at all. B&B were passable but unmemorable, bless. But Dogberry was actually one of the better ones. It was staged poorly with action at the back in the corner at the beginning, none of the backstory came through and if you didn't know the story beforehand you would not have got it at all from the opening. Having found fault and been disappointed, yet again, there was a crowd of young ‘uns’ in , who loved it, standing ovation, cheers, the lot.

Had a weird encounter on the underground tonight, walking down the passage in Green Park between the Piccadilly and Victoria lines. A young guy approached me saying he’s trying to get to Finsbury Park. Said I don’t know where that is, so he said it again “Fins-buh-ree Park” as if he couldn’t believe I didn’t know the place. Told him again I don’t know. Seemed to accept it this time, then put his hand out for fist bumping, which I did, even though I’d rather not. Then he said he’d had some trouble, showed me he’s missing a front tooth and that he’s got quite a lot of dried blood all over his top, which I hadn’t noticed before as I was looking at his face. Now, any stranger approaching me makes me suspicious, but this was too much. I was already trying to walk a little faster to get away from him, but now more so. As I moved ahead he kept calling out stuff like “chin up, mate” and “walk with confidence.” I got up the stairs two at a time and went as far down the platform as I could before the train left, don’t know if he was still following at that point. The whole thing made me a bit paranoid. He may well have been genuine, but in that case why wasn’t he asking anyone else for help. There’s plenty of signage and dozens of other people about, so why ask me? I’ve been hassled before when I gave a homeless man some change and then he wouldn’t leave me alone, and a couple of times in Liverpool with homeless people again. Is it just that I’m on my own? Does that make me an easy target? I’m 6ft-ish with an angry-looking relaxed face 😠 you’d think that would make people leave me alone if anything. Also your height might make you a bit of a target for those idiots who look for trouble. Sorry you had this bother.

You are allowed to order a box of LFTs a day, I've done so three days in a row and will continue until next week when they start charging. Thanks for reminding me.

It was inevitable they would stop making LFTs free at some point. Still, encouraging people to continue being responsible even though it's no longer mandatory, whilst simultaneously removing one of the main means by which people can continue to be voluntarily responsible, isn't exactly joined-up policy making. It’s mean and silly. The sensible people want to stay sensible. Joined up went out of the window decades a go, but one might expect the last vestige of common sense to prevail….

Well done Spain. A while back in Japan, we saw people wearing masks and it looked random, mums with buggies but not their kids, business men walking but not people in shops, some people serving in shops but not all. V odd. Now I understand a bit more. Mind you , getting on the train there in the morning made it easier to comprehend. And guess who is going to be mask wearing til the summer?

Hope the new neighbours are good neighbours My own, perfectly lovely neighbours are going through, rather than from, hell right now. Their house, which is adjoined to mine, was gutted by fire on Saturday. Everyone is safe thankfully. My porch glazing was destroyed by the heat and my front door was broken in by the fire service checking no-one was home (I was safely ensconced in London about to watch the glorious Operation Mincemeat), but otherwise the damage to my house is minimal, save for the acrid smell of smoke everywhere and the film of sooty, greasy residue on every surface. The prospect of the clean-up exhausts me, but then I look at the shell of my neighbours' home and count my blessings. O how dreadful. You usually have to redecorate never mind clean. Your poor neighbours. It is amazing how often there are house fires considering the modern stuff we have now. Hope you all get sorted out. Perhaps your insurance will pay for rented until yours is ok. good luck. Keep us posted

Finished this last night. Great fun. She must have been difficult at times 🤪 Some funny anecdotes. Not much gossip. Interesting to compare with Brian Cox’s book. Not sure I could manage an evening with either of them. But a good read, a strong voice.

Did I say I am ‘man down’? No taste, no smell, head like a brick, Victorian style cough. You know that list of symptoms on the lemsip packet? Got em all. Urgh. Of course, I’m jabbed, thrice, of course I wear a mask on tube, in shops which I never go into anyway. This virus must be like a cloud resting on top of us dropping its mean little particles like the confetti of doom.

They are making it Shylock's play. Which is hardly radical or innovative. There was a long tradition particularly in the 19th century IIRC of ending the play after the trial and ignoring Act 5 completely. Shylock appears in a very small number of scenes and exits the play in Act 4. He isn't the dominant character in terms of lines or stage time. Yes he is a key player but the play as written is not the Shylock play. He certainly isn't the title character as some have always believed. So I fear that this will be an attempt to force a contemporary agenda on the text. I find it frustrating that so many contemporary directors don't trust the text to show you how to approach the play. If you don't trust it, don't direct it. The ‘Merchant’ of Venice is almost a concept isn’t it? The play is all about commodifying human experience. Bassanio needs dosh to go get Portia who has been made an object of her father’s will and is to be ‘sold/awarded tho’ nice touch that the man she gets isn’t swayed by the dosh on offer, or is he? Portia has to give him a mighty big hint which casket to choose. And so it goes on. Shylock bemoans the loss of a daughter and sets that against the loss of the ring which was given to him by his beloved wife, so circles of money and affection and which wins out? Antonio is I suppose, the actual physical merchant who gives money to keep friendship ( love?) but who ends up with nobody and the idea of the money being turned into flesh says it all… I’m not a huge fan of this play. We did it in school - I was 14- and I can remember the teacher telling us very firmly that Shakespeare was not antisemitic. I agree with that but it does take some energy to maintain that view unless the production is sensitive and unless you’ve see Marlowe’s Jew of Malta which is full on, go kill the Jews kind of stuff. The play does need a revamp, fresh eyes, so let’s hope this is it.

I imagine Broadway is on the cards as Stoppard usually does well there. This was, I believe the plan before the virus.

I’m not a huge fan of community theatre being used in this way. At the moment all I’m thinking is what a covid nightmare managing all those people. Let’s hope the virus has gone then.

Warm and fuzzy reading through this thread. I came from Whatsonstage which I had found by some odd freak of internet serendipity. I was invited to be a Mod possibly because I was opinionated and it was a good way to control my offerings 😁 and I have really enjoyed being here. The other guys do most of the work, all the techie and the close examination of all our machinations. I love the revues of plays and shows and the newsy gossip. I like reading the opinions of theatre minded people on current problems. I think over the last two years this has helped to keep me from drowning in all the internet/ so called social stuff in other places; the anxiety has its own home so to speak. Long may we continue

Such a squashed and uncomfortable seating I wonder if people will be put off. The irony of replicating a theatre that emerged in age of plague ..
