Sad but not too shocking, he'd been ill for a number of years.

My favourite from him was the fantastic 1987 TV series “Tutti Frutti” by the great playwright John Byrne. It was commissioned by the genius director Bill Bryden after he’d left the NT to be the BBC Scotland head of drama.

I first saw him playing Dick Whittington's cat in a panto in Irvine, Scotland for Borderline Theatre company, written by John Byrne, in 1979.
There was a scene where the cat had to run around the audience to hide from the baddies, and Robbie was magnificently foul-mouthed to the annoying little kids who wanted to show up where he was hiding... which of course, the kids being Ayrshire schoolkids, loved enormously.

So sad to hear about Robbie Coltrane. Cracker remains one of the greatest television dramas ever broadcast. To Be A Somebody with Robert Carlyle is an education in writing and acting. His early comedy work with The Comic Strip and in Alfresco is well worth a watch.
