I have a pair of Lucky Dip tickets for a show at the Young Vic tomorrow but am unsure exactly how these work. The show is not sold out - does that mean we'll be put into vacant seats?
Are positions allocated based on order of arrival at the theatre or order of purchase, i.e. is it worth getting there particularly early?
Thanks for any insight!

I would certainly get there early and try and be close to the house doors. FoH normally bring a group to each side of the house as soon as it opens and you stand there until about 5 minutes before the show. Then they'll start giving you seats in order that you are in the queue inside, depending on how busy it actually is, you even get to pick some seat or suggest to the usher where you want to go. If it's not hugely busy, they've been known to just let people sit anywhere. When you bought the tickets won't count at all, it's purely arrival order. It's a great scheme and we use it a fair bit if we can't get our preferred seats and we've never been given separate seats either

In general, you get seats which have been sold, but where the ticket holders have not turned up on time. There are always some people who do not attend, for whatever reason. There is always the risk too that the seat is free at the start, but you have to move during the show (or during the interval) to another seat or to the standing positions.
At other times, they might know there are unsold seats (or house seats), so you have no risk of losing your seat. But this still won't be assigned in advance. They will be trying to sell tickets on the door and there are also other methods that theatres use to ensure that unsold seats have people sat in them.
Definitely get in the queue early, as the better seats are allocated to the people at the front of the queue. It also never hurts to be friendly with the ushers, as they have a lot of say regarding which seats get allocated. Of course, if the show really isn't all that busy, this won't make a lot of difference, but I'll keep this in as general advice as many shows at the Young Vic do sell out.

Thank you both for the top tips! How did you get on? It was fantastic! We arrived about 25 minutes before the start of the show and were first in the queue. Chatting to the usher he said they like to leave it as late as possible to seat the Lucky Dippers as they see it as a personal challenge to get people in the best seats available! Once doors were closed we were seated in some top price seats in the centre of the stalls. Would definitely do this again and strongly recommend for a tenner, especially if it's for a show you're not sure you'll enjoy or don't mind where you sit (or stand).
