I did a quick search, and I’m really surprised that there isn’t already a thread on this. Are there no STRANGER THINGS fans on this board? I have been a huge fan of it since it first premiered, and think that the recently released fourth season is the best so far. It is absolutely stunning! Are there no STRANGER THINGS fans on this board? I have been a huge fan of it since it first premiered, and think that the recently released fourth season is the best so far. I love it, especially this one as I'm exactly of the Hellraiser, Elm Street, body-horror-movie on VHS generation, and for what it's doing for one of my favourite young actors Joseph Quinn's career too (and for what he's doing for them: reportedly, he made Eddie - trending again on Twitter this morning, 8 billion plus views for the #eddiemunson hashtag on Tiktok - more endearing than the Duffers' original, more Damian Echols-y conception) Netflix execs must be absolutely kicking themselves they killed him off I heard that they were planning spin-offs and assumed it would be TV, but maybe they're also planning something Cursed Child-style? There was a one-off episode in series 3 (I think) where Eleven went off, became a goth and fell in with a group of kids with superpowers clearly inspired by Grant Morrison's The Invisibles, right down to the graffiti on the walls of their den - maybe we'll see more of those characters? |

There's a bit more info about the Stranger Things play on the Collider site this week. "New 'Stranger Things' Stage Play Details Are Giving Hellcheer Vibes.....the stage play is said to be set in the Stranger Things universe, based on the Duffer mythology. At the time it was announced, very little was disclosed, though they did share that the play had tapped multi-Tony Award-winner Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot the Musical) to direct and produce, with Sonia Friedman (The Book of Mormon) and Netflix producing, and 21 Laps as Associate Producer. When a casting breakdown went up recently, we snagged a few more details to speculate over, and we’re not exactly saying Hellcheer, we’re just saying it’s giving vibes. The casting call posted is for two characters, currently under the names George Smith and Betty Olsen, both 14 years old. George is described as a “moody and pale” outcast, while Betty is the daughter of a preacher and a “goody two-shoes” who can’t believe she’s falling for the school’s outcast. It sounds awfully similar to the woods scene in Season 4 between Hawkins High bad boy, Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), and head cheerleader, Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien) before Jamie Campbell Bower’s Vecna ruined everything. Finally, the breakdown for Betty specifically calls for BIPOC actors with the ability to sing. This means we may be getting some original Hawkins, Indiana, and Upside Down-themed tunes when this untitled project hits the stage. All details regarding when this story takes place have yet to be revealed, but the Duffer Brothers’ universe lends plenty of options to be explored. Maybe we’ll go back in time and run into young Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour), or the play could hop forward in time to after whatever events take place in Stranger Things Season 5." Stranger Things 4 wasn't shot in sequence and Chrissy's death had already been filmed before the part-improvised woods scene's chemistry made the showrunners wish they could have explored that unexpected relationship more. Well, it looks like they might be using 'Hellcheer' in a different form for the play (with a dash of Wednesday gothness for the boy?). |

Canonically, Eddie and Chrissy weren't 14 at the same time. He's two years older than her. Not that they can't retcon their own world or be purposefully misleading in the casting details - but it's interesting to note.

The Stranger Things wikia page reliably informs me that Joyce and Hopper are the same age, however if we go back to their childhoods then we lose the '80s setting and I really think that would be a huge mistake. Skipping forward too far would have the same result, and going forward only a few years would mean revealing details of how the show's going to end - is the play slated to play after S5 airs? Because that feels like a while away! It makes the most sense to set it early '80s, just before the start of the show, I'd assume? Which I guess does track with it being Eddie and Chrissy, other than the age discrepancy.

It doesn't sound like they're re-doing Eddie and Chrissy, but new characters (goth-ish sounding boy and preacher's daughter) with a similar vibe, though in their TV casting calls they have used deliberately misleading names so who knows, it's possible, given how popular they are with fans? If it's with music, maybe a bit like a darker, younger 1980s version of Sandy and Danny in Grease! |
