ive never been to Stratford but I'm hoping to go later this year. Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay? I know I could ask the Tourist Office but I'd rather get a recommendation. I will be on my own so want somewhere safe. I also don't mind a Travelodge or Premier Inn if its close

The Premier Inn is super close and sometimes does this £29 per night deal which is pretty unbeatable on price. I always stay there because I'm a cheapskate.
There are zillions of B&Bs too, most pretty decent.

If you're driving, go for the Premier Inn Waterside as it has a car park, by train I'd go for the Premier Inn Stratford Centre (or whatever it's called)
Waterside is a 10 minute walk from the theatre, the other one is closer [
If you're on your own and it's a first visit the premier inn in the centre would be ideal as its so close to the theatre
If you want a treat the Mercure Shakespeare is very nice! There's a big Holiday Inn which is pricier and less nice than the Premier Inns

Always seemed a pretty safe town to me.
And the Mercure is a decent gaff for a treat.

Yes, I also recommend the Premier Inn Central. It's an easy flat walk (or drunken stagger) to and from the theatres. Plus if you come by coach it's practically opposite the coach station.
The Mercure Shakespeare and the Falcon are both very nice if you want to spend a bit more money, and slightly closer to the theatres (although an uphill walk).
There's quite a few decent guesthouses on Grove Road, but you are about a 15 minute walk from the theatres.

Second either Prem Inn - I've stayed in far more expensive places that have been much less comfortable. Also agree about safety - I always go alone and have felt fine walking anywhere in the town at any time.

Stratford is so ridiculously safe that I - as a solo lady theatre-goer - have walked three miles out of town to the youth hostel, after all the street lights decided to turn themselves off (the midlands are VERY DARK with no street lights!), shared a room with several strangers, and still felt as safe as I do tucked away in my own bed at home, and significantly safer than I'd've felt walking around my home town at a similar time of night. Just find somewhere you can afford that you can be bothered walking to, you'll be fine safety-wise.

Premier Inn vote also! Very easy by car and a nice little hotel. If you're feeling 'fancy' the Stratford "Q" hotel just on the edge of town is one of my favourite places to stay anywhere.
I also agree as a lady theatre-er I have never felt unsafe in Statford, also because so many people are staggering out of the theatre and across town at the same time very little of your journey to any of the hotels/b&bs will be 'alone' it's also very well lit etc on the main streets.

A little tip if you're treating yourself to the Mercure, it's part of Accorhotels, so sign up to their loyalty scheme and you generally get a (very) slight discount.
I doubt that hotel ever comes up in their Happy Monday's promo (book on a Monday or Tuesday for the following weekend to get a cheap rate) as it must always be busy, but if you're booking in advance you should get 5% off.

Plus if you book via topcashback you get another 10% or so back
Accor Happy Mondays is a great tip for non London-based people heading to London - book on Monday or Tuesday for the following weekend, get a room for £40 or £60 per night l. Just go to accorhotels website and use promotion code MONDAY. Availability varies but I've never had a weekend where I wanted a room and there was nothing available

Just a word of warning on the Mercure - some of the bargain rooms are bargain for a reason. I tried it once with a good deal, and got a really uncomfortable bed and tiny room with noisy pipes clanging all night. I then (for some reason) gave it another chance when I saw another deal and got an even smaller room with an even more uncomfortable bed, and the shower didn't work. And the chambermaid barged into my room and woke me up at 7.20am on a Sunday morning. So definitely sticking to the Premier Inn from now on!

Further warning, the door to the Mercure is right next to the door of Stratford police station, so it's quite easy to accidentally check into the wrong one, as abby found... though how she managed it twice... Ha! Well, I so often wake up wearing handcuffs with no recollection of what happened the night before...

On that note, the Premier Inn Stratford proved that their 'good night guarantee' isn't just a advertising gimmick-we had a faulty air-conditioner that a) didn't seem to work b) made odd noises all night. We mentioned it on checking out, just as a 'by the way we didn't break it' thing and they immediately offered refund as we said it was noisy all night. Always had excellent service in general across all Premier Inns...Sir Lenny doesn't lie it seems
