It strikes me as somewhat unfair when you think about it that generally there are only awards for the originators of roles in theatre. Someone could take over a role in the west end (or anywhere) and give an iconic performance for the ages and not even get any recognition. I think it's the case that there is an award for them in america right? I seem to remember so. It would be nice to have a category in at least one of the major award ceremonies over here.

I suppose it might be considered a bit shady if the person who originated the role got nowt then someone comes in and scoops up the awards!

It has been known to happen; Patti, Betty Buckley and Elaine were all nominated for an Olivier in consecutive years for the original production of Sunset (though none of them won), but that was nearly 30 years ago of course. I don’t know what the rules are but I guess the nominators have enough to see each year as it is without having to go back to Wicked annually, for example, to see the 200th take on Elphaba.

The Olivier Awards are probably the only major theatre award that allows it and some people actually won it. Joanna Riding won the Olivier when she took over from Martine McCutcheon in My Fair Lady (who won the previous year), and Robert Lindsay won for his Fagin in 1997, three years after Jonathan Pricey "originated" the role in the London Palladium revival of Oliver!.

Yeah for example pretty sure the NT's remount of 'Small Island' this year isn't eligible as a whole, but the new actors taking over the lead roles can be considered in the acting categories.

I don't see why someone outstanding in a role shouldn't be nominated whether it is a new production or not. The issue may be would the judges populate the long running shows like Phantom every year ?

I don't think the Oliviers do it any more unless it's a newly-remounted production. Keeping up with every cast change in every show in the West End would be too much to keep track of and would take the spotlight away from the new shows which are having their moment.
It would be fun to see it as a separate event though.

New shows (and performers) shouldn’t be nominated just because they’re new.

The logistics of judging every single actor/actress working in the West End in one year would be mind-boggling. And what if a show has multiple cast changes?
