I haven’t seen a single thing programmed at Aviva Studios that interests me and putting on Opera there isn’t going to change that. It’s not what you’d call accessible.
But I suppose we have the ATG houses for we “the masses” to tip out popcorn over the floor at.

So that's the sponsored name of what was the Factory? I think we speculated on this somewhere earlier in the thread.

The “concept” is still called The Factory. I’d like to think that someone realised calling the venue The Factory was a terrible choice of name given there’s an existing long-standing venue called the same. But it’s probably just money talking as it’s being sponsored by the insurance company. By 2026 it could be named after Sun Bingo…who knows.

We may not like a location taking a name but if it is sponsored by a benefactor or a company and it keeps the venue running surely this is a good thing. Okay we'd not want certain companies but the cigarette manufacturers are banned from sponsoring sports so I think that would be the same for arts venues and it isn't a thing the betting companies are likely to jump on.
Guarding against things like the Colston issues in Bristol would also happen as living benefactor's backgrounds could be checked etc.

The Opera House had an Aviation Gin stand inside the theatre last time I was there.

It only opened a couple of weeks ago. It’s a vanity project of the MIF and Manchester Council who are a bit fond of willy waving with this kind of thing. I wish it well and I hope the ENO brings an audience to it but I predict otherwise so thank god Aviva are subbing it. |

We had this in Birmingham years back when the Royal Ballet and the D'oyly Carte Opera both came to us. There was even talk of us trying to get London Zoo. The BRB has been a success, not sure what happened to the Opera though and the Council currently doesn't have a pot to **** in. |

Fascinating fact about the zoo, i never knew that.
D'oyly Carte, well G&S went out of fashion. Brum pulled their funding, they went to Wolverhampton for a season but funding wasnt secure. Then its main backer (the cheif exec of an airline loved G&S) got bored of bank rolling them and so stopped funding them also. I did see a handful of their productions and they served as a great introduction to opera for me, back in the day i loved Mikado, Fledermaus and Pinafore. The latter had a young Alfie Boe in, i wonder what happened to him ...

Was that the New D'Oyly Carte rather than the original one? Otherwise, given the original company closed in 1982, Alfie Boe is a lot older than I thought he was!

I'd forgotten they inserted the word New into the title, years ahead of Tony Blair ... After Wolverhampton said no, they had a few seasons at the Savoy before co productions with Scottish opera. Pics of our Alfie from the 93 tour - enjoy!     |

English Touring opera is to relocate to sheffield. Good for Sheffers but i hope they can carry on performing in Hackney as ive become quite attached to them over the years

We get to see the inner workings of Aviva Studios on Sunday, as series 2 of The Piano reaches its climax on Channel 4.
Despite costing all those millions, there was only enough money for one escalator, which goes up before performances and down afterwards!
