Just read about this in Playbills Instagram feed: Billy Crystal confirmed to star with Shoshana Bean: previews start in March, I’m severely tempted to go and see this (not that tempted that I would book a trip to NYC just to see it but you get the hint)

I will miss this on my planned March trip now as it’s pushed back previews by a few weeks.

I know.
Another one for Mr Jason Robert Brown to add to his supreme catalogue.

It opens just in time for me to catch it, and it wasn't on my radar at all due to prices and lack of interest in Billy Christal, but now Shoshana is in it i feel like i might have to...

This has announced that it is closing: www.playbill.com/article/broadways-mr-saturday-night-sets-closing-dateNot JRB's best score by any means, but it is still one I have listened to a lot recently. Do we think that this has any chance of transferring to the West End? I know that the film has hardly any name recognition over here, but if Billy Crystal was willing to do a limited engagement, surely it could sell on his name alone? I would love to see it. I am still waiting on an Off-West End venue to produce HONEYMOON IN VEGAS.

Me too!I am still waiting on an Off-West End venue to produce HONEYMOON IN VEGAS. Yes! Yes! Yes!I saw the concert a couple of years back and (I believe) at the time there were talks to try and bring it over. As we're still waiting, I guess these fell through. JRB is like the new Sondheim and his scores such as The Last 5 Years, Parade and The Bridges of Madison County are just sublime!

I’d say this has next to no chance of a transfer.

I think there's more chance of a snowstorm in August than Mr Saturday Night coming over.

Why is this? Is it just not very good? Or is it too "New York"?

I loved this show. I wouldn’t say it’s “too New York” but it’s definitely a show written for the Jews (my people). Very borscht belt humor that, if that’s not your thing, you probably wouldn’t enjoy. But as for me, I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard each time I’ve seen it.

Why is this? Is it just not very good? Or is it too "New York"? I don’t think the problem is it being too ‘New York’. The script has a few good laughs, but for the most part is very weak. The other characters are so thinly drawn they may as well have saved some dollars and used a bunch of cardboard cutouts instead. In particular Shoshana Bean is criminally underused. When all you’ve really got is Billy Crystal’ shtick from start to finish, it gets very wearing. There was no point in it being a musical, in fact with a better script, it may have worked better as a play in a smaller venue. I’m not a huge Jason Robert Brown fan, but in this case the music is so perfunctory it could have been written by a computer. It’s hard to fathom why, aside from the fee, Brown would have wanted to do the show. His contribution is as negligible as it gets. This is not helped by having three of the four principals struggling to carry a tune. Crystal can just about manage it,but the actress who plays his wife ( no chemistry between them whatsoever) was really struggling on the night I saw it and poor David Paymer ( playing Crystal’s brother) looked like he was risking a stroke every time he was called upon to sing. It just felt like a gigantic vanity project plumped down in a theatre that was way too big for it. The average age of the audience was around 60+, which is not that surprising since Crystal hasn’t been particularly visible for quite a while. The whole enterprise just felt very sad to me. It certainly isn’t the worst show running on Broadway at the moment, but it is possibly the most inexplicable one. Why, especially in the current post-Covid financial climate,or in any climate for that matter, the producers (Crystal being one of them) thought the production would have a chance of a successful and decently long run is absolutely incomprehensible.

I saw the matinee today and it was fun and cute, but nothing deeper than that. It’s also VERY American humour, and aimed at a much older audience. Quite a bit went right over my head.
I absolutely loved Shoshana, her number at the top of act two will become a very popular number outside of the show id guess (Maybe it starts with me)
