Had a similar experience at Sadler's Wells a few weeks ago - went to see Singin in the Rain and sadly masks were very much the exception.
I understand the temptation to fully rule out theatre visits after this experience - but I think there is great variation across venues so maybe you would feel more comfortable somewhere else. At the National Theatre people are asked to wear masks at the bag checks, which helps somewhat, and the Hampstead Theatre actually enforces this quite strongly - one would feel a bit of a brat not to wear one there! Quite the opposite of Sadler's Wells...

I was also at Sadler's Wells yesterday. Having been all over town recently - Royal Court to Almeida, Covent Garden to Young and Old Vic - I didn't find Sadler's Wells different to anywhere else.
The only thing I would say was different was the sighting of an 80-85-year old. Not that I look for the older crowd, this particular lady was sitting almost directly in front of me. She had also decided to not wear a mask. It was interesting as well becasue her sons came over to chat during the interval so it was clearly a family decision - you might imagine after several conversations.
Incidentally, 1,500 full house for both performances yesterday

Fwiw, on masks I've come to assume ushers reflect the approach of a venue. That doesn't, of course, mean the audience will follow. It has become a personal choice.
