I'm not sure how much I have to go on, or whether I'm muddling a few up, but I'm hoping one of you will recognise this description.
It's a song that was used in a musical, but was released first as a pop song which had a girl's name as the title. I think the name began with M. It possibly had something to do with a beach, but that might be completely wrong.
The major difference between it in the musical and as a pop song is that it's played much faster in one (I want to say the musical slows it down).
I heard about it on a Radio 2 show, possibly Friday Night is Music Night. It was definitely somebody like Don Black who was talking about it. Part of me wants to say it was an Andrew Lloyd Webber, but that might just be because he has form for recycling!
If anybody can help I'd be very grateful. Or feel free to add your own "what is that?!" if you'd like.

If by ALW my only guesses would be Magdalena or Marisa? Neither well known as pop songs or show tunes.

It's Magdalena thank you! As soon as I saw it was sung by Tony Christie I knew that was the one I was after.
It's the "It's A Pig" song in By Jeeves. Perhaps it was mentioned after it was on The Shows Must Go On in the first lockdown.
