I just saw this and am now relaxing in Leicester Square before dinner then a train home after a weekend where this was the only show that I booked and saw at the time expected! (Covid stole lion king, sister act, Joseph and amelie and my hoped for but not booked early visit to Anything Goes and I ended up with Les Mis, Pippin, Tina and The Windsors Endgame so not too shabby). I know I am high on the post show buzz but this may have been my favourite of the weekend.
As mentioned up thread I overpaid but got bargains on my other 3 shows so win some, lose some. Not a huge audience which helped the people in the row behind easily move as they couldn’t see past me! I was second row and luckily nobody directly in front. I think you’d have to know and love the TV show to get the characterisation of these not quite real life royals. You need to have an understanding of how we got to this point and I think any tourists may have a surprise! It didn’t matter to me that many parts were recast, it gave a chance for some newcomers to shine and also to see some great names on stage.
I get the point made earlier about too much front of curtain stuff but for a short run and I’m guessing plonked on top of Mormon’s stage too much automation or fancy stuff was out. When I booked I wasn’t expecting songs but they really added to it and were greatly enjoyed by the audience.
I think Matthew Cottle as Prince Edward and anyone else who needed a line more or less was my favourite performance.
The show is panto like and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It will definitely be on my reserve list for if I lose any more shows (I really hope not with the rule changes) or otherwise a spare slot comes up.
If you can get a cheap ticket (either near the back or discounted go for it) but don’t pay £85 and maybe have a head in your way!
