Sad news. I only saw a few of their shows, but they always managed to put on a way more ambitious show than other touring companies.

The issue isn't that they are insolvent but no longer viable.
When a new company has been set up by their former director and doing work along very similar lines, it does raise the issue of whether the decision to funnel so much money into Wise Children was the right one.
It looks rather that the birth of a new company could well have contributed to the death of a long-established and beloved one.
Wise Children was given a lot of money from the South West ACE pot even though they are looking like a London company that tours a bit.

I wonder what the deal is with the Culture Recovery Fund?
On the one hand I'm pleased that everyone will receive what they're due but, on the other, that clearly wasn't the purpose of the funding.
Poor Truro (re)gains the Cornwall Playhouse and looses Kneehigh, almost simultaneously.

RIP. I saw a few of their productions, Rebecca, the very good Brief Encounter and the very regrettable Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
Whilst I often disagreed with Emma's view on the arts and what was important, I always respected their uncompromising vision to how they wanted their "brand" honoured even after Emma left.
As with anything like this, my heart is with the employees front and back of house who gave up blood sweat and tears for the company they loved.

I feel like Emma Rice was their identity and since Wise Children was established - they still were the same? A real loss for the Westcountry, I was born and raised here so it’s just a big frustration. |
