I loved the songs and performances, but the book and pacing were a bit all over the place for me. The first half is much stronger than the second. There’s mention of a cast recording in the programme which I’ll be looking forward to.
Glad I saw it but won’t be rushing back.

I thought this was so good! I liked the pacing and thought the 1h30min flew by. The performances are top notch, very good use of the set and lighting, and the songs left me humming on the way back home. I was surprised at how good the book was given such a simple framing device. I agree with what somebody said before that I was expecting it to be funnier, but I thought it delivered so much when it got more serious. I can't wait for the cast recording (which they were announcing on a poster by the entrance), and if this had a longer run I would see it again.

I'm really enjoying the cast recording ... Although the song, Chamred existence of Fred Rose makes me think of Fred and Rose West thankfully the creepiness stops there and I'm excited about seeing this one.

Saw this tonight in the Curve Leicester Studio. It wasn't for me, and it's all a bit of a mess, with a central character being portrayed like the young on-screen Barbra Streisand characters, all fast-talking and overbearing, but without any of the wit and endearing charm. Frankly, this woman, who professes to have cycled the globe, is not likeable as written.
The music is inoffensive but some songs sounded similar, and the lyrics were frequently inaudible especially in the first few numbers.
The real-life story has much potential, but the treatment here left me uninterested and bored rigid.
On the plus side, the costumes are nicely realised, and the hidden band acquit themselves well.
Two stars (and I'm being kind there).
One act: 19:46-21:20

It worked really well as a 1 hour show at Vaults, but it's expanding has been nothing but detrimental to the original piece.

Interesting to see the critics are lukewarm on Ride, whereas the bloggers are gushing.
Similar to Heathers and Bonnie & Clyde, which I both loved, in that sense.
Looking forward to seeing Ride again next week!

Looking forward to seeing Ride again next week! I was a fan of both of those but not Ride. I sense they'd not be good bellwethers for how likely Ride will appeal to you. Will be interested to hear what you thought next week.

Was at Friday evening’s performance and Liv Andrusier put in one of the most dynamic individual performances I’ve ever seen. Wow. I’d somehow forgotten what an incredible vocalist she is and I just cannot wait to see what she does next. A future Veronica Sawyer definitely, a future Fanny Brice? Surely!
A beautiful score from Freya Catrin Smith and Jack Williams, plus fantastically detailed and gorgeous set and costume design by Amy Jane Cook.
A huge mention to Fallon Mondlane who made her *debut* as Martha with total comfort and ease. It’s not a perfect show, there are parts of the book that need tightening in a show with no interval. There is a slight dip in momentum around the time she meets Fred.
I saw it at Charing Cross last year and enjoyed it so much more this time around, in part due to being able to admire Andrusier’s portrayal as Annie from the front row.
Four stars.

I'm continually having to remind myself this is a different show to Glory Ride.

4 stars for me at Southwark tonight.
Oof I see in my previous review I was particularly mean. Perhaps I was having a bad day.
I don't know if the production has been tightened up since it was at Charring Cross, my memory doesn't extend that far back. All that I can remember is that I found the production rather meh.
In any case this time around I connected a lot more with Ride. Liv Andrusier remains one of the most brilliant theatre talents around. Heavenly heavenly voice & a tour de force of a performance.

Caught the show this afternoon and thought it was…fine. It had some very good moments with some nice music throughout but this one reminded me of a lot of small festival type shows that were around in the early 00’s, if that makes any sense. Good performances but the material was nothing I’d ever think I need to revisit.
