I belatedly realised that it was Taron Egerton who played the young swimmer lad in Last of the Hausmans. His first job out of drama school. My theatre buddy and I have started going to some RADA productions, so hopefully in years to come we can play this game a lot! Wow, I remember the play, particularly because when he came out in his trunks my mate next to me gasped very loudly and we were in the front row so it was very obvious but I had no idea that was Taron Egerton until now! I seem to remember all the gays in the audience gasping (along with Rory Kinnear playing one on stage). I loved that play, so funny and brillantly acted. |

I was lucky enough to see Taron in Last of the Hausmans, Tom Hardy in Man of Mode and the very talented young cast in Chat Room etc.
This may be obvious but the original cast of the History Boys in 2004 was incredible: Russel Tovey, Jamie Parker, Samuel Barnett, James Corden and Dominic Cooper!

I saw the Donmar Into the Woods too, but what pity they got Frank Middlemass's name wrong!
I never noticed that until now despite having kept the programme too.

Sadly for me the people I've seen years ago who went onto star in things tend to be those that popped up in EastEnders or The Bill for years on end. I did see Rory Kinnear about 20 years ago when he had hair and I thought of him as son of Roy (which to be fair, I still do). And I saw future Oscar winning actress Olivia Coleman at a time when I only knew her as Bev from the adverts. Saw Rory play the servant chappie in Taming of the Shrew at RSC million years a go. Didn’t know who he was but he was far and away the best thing on the stage. Looked at the programme ...ah and then followed his rise to greater things thereafter. The action that got me and the rest of the audience was when having changed clothes with his master, the shoes are too small and he winces limping but trying to be elegant. I hope he is using the lockdown to write another play. |

I can't say for definite as I didn't buy a programme at the time, but there's a chance I saw Tom Holland as Michael in Billy Elliot in 2009. In that case you may well have seen Dean Charles Chapman from 1917 as Billy as well. |

2011. Gielgud Theatre
An unusual show -The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, I saw it twice though and very much enjoyed.
Towards the end of the show, a moment where a young actress had a small role, her voice was heavenly and her presence stood out. Who was she?
It was Cynthia Erivo. And I’m so happy she’s gone on to do many great things.

And I’m so happy she’s gone on to do many great things. Cynthia Erivo was in a musical commissioned for Brighton Festival in 2010, Marine Parade, written by Simon Stephens and Mark Eitzel. The venue that was chosen for it was in Hove and wasn't particularly well-known at the time and I happened to work in the Box Office.
It had a good cast considering it was only playing for a week or so - Arthur Darvill, Kate O'Flynn, Jeff Rawle, Lee Ross, Thusitha Jayasundera - alongside Cynthia and there was a real buzz about the place considering we were housing such a hot ticket. Anyway, Cynthia was the only member of the cast I actually got to have a proper conversation with. So, I picked well there. |

This might be a bit of fun for those stuck at home. I was just searching for an old programme and picked up Avenue Q Noel Coward Theatre 2006. Just had a look at the cast and apart from obvious cast members like Julie Atherton, Jon Robyns and Simon Lipkin I also found: Giles Terera as Gary, Gabriel Vick as swing and wait for it...... Luke Evan's ensemble! Anyone else fancy a go at surprising us? This was my first West End show, thanks for the happy memories! |

I saw Paterson Joseph reading from the script in The Pretenders (Ibsen) at the Barbican when he'd gone on as the understudy. c1988
First professional production of Merrily we Roll Along with Tracie Bennet as Mary - the talk show host was Paul Kerryson
