To spend less! Not to see less. just to spend less. So be less picky about seats, take advantage of offers and sales, use rushes and lotteries more, use cheaper hotels, pre plan so i can take advantage of cheaper rail fares...all of which is stuff i have a habit of not doing for various reasons including being both a bit of a theatre seat snob and a hotel snob...I've started well because my upcoming London trip in January is probably going to turn out to be my cheapest theatre trip/stay there ever, so hopefully it's something i can continue.

@andyh have you tried using TrainSplit? I've only just discovered it but got some good bargains.
I want to see a bit less, spend less and keep a (middle aged spread) sheet of theatre tickets.

No, i'll have to check it out. Another resolution is to keep a list of shows i've seen and when, or at least keep the tickets so i know! Often times i just get rid of the tickets or lose them!

From next week I am going down to working 4 days a week and having Fridays off so don't want to waste that day. My resolution is therefore to make Fridays my theatre day as I don't have to be up early the next day for work and don't have to go straight from work to the theatre. I also want to get out of London more to see regional theatre so can make a little weekend of it. One of the shows I must see out of London next year is West Side Story when it returns to Manchester I am also going to stop buying theatre mugs which are a complete waste of money as they just end up in a cupboard that no one sees and replace them with fridge magnets as they are more visible.

To do less repeat viewings of shows, see all the new shows that grab my attention and generally spend less on tickets. If any of them will let me down it’ll be the repeat visits. I’m so bad for going back to the same few shows when I’m in need of a pick me up or I just can’t decide what else to see.

I added up my 2019 theatregoing & it's mostly split between the ROH (35 perfs, no wonder I'm broke!), Showstopper (26 perfs) & Mischief (19 perfs between 5 shows). That's 80 performances out of the 105 I saw! Maybe in 2020 I should try for a bit more variety of companies seen...

My main new year’s resolution is to go to the theatre more often. In 2020 I will finally have the means and opportunity to do so. Previously, I was a student (so: no money) and I lived in Switzerland for 4,5 years (so, no matter how much money I had — even as a paid PhD student — theatre was ridiculously expensive (like everything else in Switzerland). Additionally, most productions were in (Swiss) German, which I do not understand). BUT I am moving to the UK in 3(!) days, where I understand the language perfectly, I have a decent (though temporary) job, I have saved money for theatre visits, and lots of theatre vouchers as presents from friends and family. So: this is the year I can splurge on theatre! I plan to watch everything that even remotely sparks my interest (while taking advantage of as many deals as possible). Usually, my theatre preferences are centred around musicals, but I am looking forward to trying lots of things outside of my comfort zone, because that is usually where I can find the little gems. I also enjoy a lot of comedians on youtube and tv, but I’ve never seen them live, so I would like to attend some comedy! Going to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival should help in that respect.
Non-theatre-related resolutions: - Take all my holiday-days (aka work less / don’t work non-stop) - Learn a new skill that is not work/science related - Really enjoy my time and new job in the UK (it’s been my dream to move to the UK for a long time, so now I should make the most of it!) - Do lots of things I enjoy in general (like reading books) and explore the UK
Here’s to a year filled with travel, new experiences, great books, and lots of theatre, including musicals, plays, comedy, pantomime, and maybe the odd ballet or opera thrown in!
Happy new year everyone!

I would like to see a show in at least 30 different theatres that I've never visited before. 14 scheduled so far, the first of which is the Courtyard between Coulsdon and Chipstead in Surrey.
Anyone ever been there ? - nearest bus stop and nearest railway station are both a mile away and the theatre seems to be in a very rural location.

The Courtyard is even nearer to me than Hever Castle and I've certainly walked past the location on the road often enough but never visited, though when we still had a local paper (and with genuinely local news rather than the syndicated crap they started using before folding), Chipstead Players' productions used to receive good reviews. Despite having done it a fair bit, I couldn't recommend walking along those roads as they're shocking rat runs, bendier than they look and with speeding cars, though in daylight and outside rush hour it'd be OK with care. As far as I know all the local transport is based in the valleys below to the east and north so quite do-able, depending on where you're coming from. There are footpaths you can use to cut out some of the road walking but again, you'd need daylight, plus dry conditions underfoot and a map. And what next, FrontrowverPaul ? At this rate you'll be going to the Archway in Horley - unless you've already been!

To see more plays. In 2019 I saw 21 musicals and 5 plays, I want to try and balance it out a bit more this year.

At this rate you'll be going to the Archway in Horley - unless you've already been! I'm aware of the Archway Theatre and did consider One Man Two Guvnors there recently. Easy location to get to as very close to railway station so hopefully they'll do a musical soon. Walking from the station to the Courtyard doesn't bother me as it's a Saturday matinee, I'll try to cadge a lift afterwards back to the main road or station but if I have to walk I'll be cautious. If the weather is okay I might be able to persuade my wife to drive there but currently only a few tickets left so (Anne Of Green Gables, play not musical) will probably sell out. Another venue I've got a problem with is in Saffron Walden. I want to see My Fair Lady there in March but the nearest station is at Audley End over 3 miles away and the buses stop by 9pm. Matinee would be fine but I've already booked a visit from Kent to Rotherham to see Barnum on the Saturday ( as one does!). MFL can run anywhere between 2 hr 45 and 3 hr 15 but will probably assume 3 hours and book a taxi. All good fun if a tad stressful at times.

I made this into a website I started using in 2019, it's been useful so far! Still adding a lot of shows and features to the site but let me know if you want to try it out, I'll send over an invite.

I saw 82 shows last year (about average for me) but only went to 12 new theatres.
I aim to avoid duplicate shows, see more new ones and visit more new theatres.
If I can save money too that will be a bonus, but I suspect any missed duplicates will be substituted by new shows!
