Sad
A great musical visionary.
However apparently he has managed to dodge a bullet for a number of years, as I read somewhere that he has been living with the HIV virus, but it didn't affect his immune system? where many other tragically it proved fatal?

Modern HIV medication means that people can live full lives these days. Its not a death sentence. Its a controlled illness.

Modern HIV medication means that people can live full lives these days. Its not a death sentence. Its a controlled illness. I am well aware of ART medication that heals HIV but still is no cure, however when he got infected was a long time before ART medication was available, he didn’t go on and develop AIDS, where opportunistic illnesses simply finish you, this killed a lot of his peers and was rife on Broadway at the time, so that is where Jerry dodged a bullet. He was immune to the HIV virus. When Hello Dolly, Mame and La Cage get mentioned, no superlative is necessary to justify these musicals.

A very sad loss. Herman was a huge talent and whilst there was considerable appreciation of his achievements I always felt he was slightly patronised by some. His music has that open-hearted quality with a melodic finesse and memorability that few have been able to match. He makes it all seem so effortless, but if you attempt to write your own Herman pastiche you very soon find it is not. Also he was a great lyricist too - not in a showy, look at my clever word play, sort of way, but more in the Irving Berlin mould, where a perfect phrase is matched to a totally appropriate musical idea.

So sad and such a talented man. Many of his musicals are iconic and will be with us forever, La Cage, Hello Dolly, Mame, Mack and Mable to name a few. I remember going to a charity concert at the Palladium years ago which was a celebration of his work. Unfortunately he was unable to fly over on the night due to illness but we had Dame Angela Lansbury as the host for the evening. But I was at a performance of Mack and Mable at the Criterion with David Soul (It was one of those actor/musician versions) and Jerry was in the audience and got a huge ovation when people realised he was there.

Right up there with Sondheim for me. He very much shaped my taste in musicals.
RIP Jerry. Your music will live on forever.
