I don't know where this thread belongs I hope mods will sort me out, General Chat or Musicals. Knowing that a production of "Hello Dolly!" with Imelda Staunton is scheduled for the west end in 2020 and having seen a clip of Craig Revel Horwood on strictly this evening, I can't help thinking he would make the better Dolly Levi. What with all the quips and one liners? Sing out Louise! Go!

As much as I enjoyed Strictly's Dolly tribute, and I know that Danny LaRue played Dolly back in the day, I can't help but feel that a drag Dolly is a bit distasteful. For all the razzmatazz of the show, Dolly's story is so specifically female. Her speech to her dead husband before "Before The Parade Passes By" is really quite touching.

Nothing against it. I’ve thought for a while now the west end should set aside one day for each production and swap the gender of the lead performers. Not the sex of the characters as that’d re-write the show, but for a charity event or something, have a gender swap.

I know Strictly was not exactly a production but heck Craig RH was waving his arms and over acting fit to burst. Hasn't there been a male Blanche in streetcar in the US recently?

As so many of the people in Strictly appear to be auditioning for a West End show I wouldn’t be at all surprised. But isn't Craig in Australia for a bit post our Strictly?
