I loved Dominic Cooke's production - if he can translate the magic to film it could be amazing.

Just please, Mr. Cooke, keep the action firmly in the theatre. We don't need to see Sally actually leave the dishes in the sink and Buddy coming home to find her gone and then chasing her to the airport, or Ben crying in a hotel room after a one-afternoon stand, or... you get the idea.

I love Follies (who could have guessed?!) and while I'm very excited for this I am a little wary. The concept of the ghosts, love-land etc. are all very theatrical and I imagine it will be difficult to translate them to film. I wonder if the documentary angle used in the stage play will maybe be used similarly as a device in the film to have the little vignettes for each character? Also what are peoples' theories on casting? Are we likely to see members of the cast return for the film or will they try to go for bigger names? I know the director of Into the Woods was maybe supposed to be doing this with Meryl Streep at some point and she'd probably be a good choice but now that this is seemingly a smaller scale production than that would have been will they even be able to get bigger names like that?

Meryl Streep, much as I love her, is about twenty years too old, even given that people look younger for their age now than they did in 1970. The show's timeline puts Sally in her late 40s at the time of the reunion; Streep looks great for 70, and could easily get away with 60, but 48 is a stretch, especially on film.

That's true, didn't really think about the ages of the characters. Then again films don't usually mind older actors playing younger than they really are although usually that only works in male actors' favour (looking at you Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt types who are always in relationships with 30 year olds while you're in your 50s). |

Totally thrilled this is going to happen and that Cooke is going to be the director - he perfectly understands it and I've always felt that it would translate brilliantly to film
Have been thinking about who I'd like to see cast in this and I think I have a list for the 4 leads:
Cate Blanchett - Sally
Catherine Zeta Jones - Phyliss
Sam Rockwell - Ben
Steve Carrell - Buddy.
I don't know if Carrell and Blanchett can sing, but I can already see just how spectacular Blanchett doing 'Losing My Mind' would be whether she can or not.
