I was sure there would be a thread for this but I can't find one, so apologies if it is buried somewhere way back.
All the reviews I had seen were raves yet on the two previous occasions, years apart, when I had seen the play, I hadn't been that impressed so I had decided that this London revival was its last chance so far as I was concerned, for all its fame. Now I'm very glad I did see it for that third and crucial time as although there are still some elements which grate, it was really well done and worthwhile.
Some of the reasons for the play's reputation are that the author, Charlotte Keatley, was only 25 when she wrote it; it's the most-performed play ever by a female playwright; it has been translated into and performed in other languages and is on exam syllabi and is for an entirely female cast - so it's pretty significant and remarkable in itself.
As if the play and production were not enough, one of the four parts has just been taken over by Hilary Tones, who today was appearing only for the second time yet managed amazingly and was warmly applauded, as was the whole cast, the others being Maureen Lipman, Katie Brayben and Serena Manteghi.
All in all, well worth seeing and it was encouraging to see an almost-full house.
