You mean like characters you can identify with? If so, then that is always/usually rubbish. Sometimes I might see a middle aged, middle class white woman in my income bracket with straight short hair and glasses, somewhat overweight ( don’t judge) with ‘opinions’ but hard to find in an Ibsen or Hamlet, say 😂 And what a bore for everyone else!

I can’t say I’ve ever heard it said. And if it was it certainly wouldn’t entice me to see something. I see quite enough of me already.

I am surprised so few have heard this used....its very much of now believing that audiences won’t come unless they see themselves on the stage as it were. Recent example Bartholomew Fair Globe trailer justifying the modern concept.
Maybe I have just tuned into it and feel some anxiety,,..my love of Theatre was often not to see myself but to engage with the notion of the other.

Me too, Dawnstar. I actively avoid any production that is described as either 'timely' or 'relevant'.

Can someone explain what this is about? What producers say 'You will see yourself up there' and where do they say it? I've never seen it on a poster ...

bank holiday request to theatre stop saying......you will see yourself up there. give it a rest thanks Is this expressing little faith in the industry or rather your lack of desire to see relatable stories?

I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. If I had to see me, others would have to too and that really isn’t on.
