What are the Must Do's for first timers?

We live outside New York and see a fair amount of Broadway. This Fall, before heading into the countryside, we’ll spend a few days in London and see some plays. What are the best activities to learn and appreciate the West End? What are the best sites to read about theater there? What was your best day or night like in the West End? Your thoughts are much appreciated.
