A new one-act play by Francessca Charlemagne on family relations and how they can damage people. A two-hander featuring two sisters who at various times have to help each other to get over a troubled early life. Daughters of a dysfunctional father, married five times and looking forward to levelling the scores with Henry VIII, Iris and Amara, played respectively by Lauren Leppard and Shannon Assaf, alternately bicker and console each other on the past and present. As the play develops the relative strengths and weaknesses of both change and invert.
Good dialogue and solid acting but the play, which feels at times like a work-in-progress, needs a touch more dramatic intensity to take it up a notch. As it is whilst grittily realistic it informs rather than enlightens on its chosen theme. But the White Bear is to be congratulated for giving young writers a chance to stage their works and Charlemagne should be encouraged to continue writing and honing her talents.
