I don't see it as removing recognition of their relationship - just acknowledging the real focus of their work. Yes Pears was a significant muse for Britten and a leading interpreter of Britten's music - but it is the music itself that is the primary focus (at least to my mind)
Pears isn't being removed from the picture - as the article makes clear. It feels like a bit of faux outrage to me.
