I've just come back from my first visit to London and the one bit of advice that I received in advance was to walk around. It was a fantastic bit of advice as I discovered by wandering that it is not really that far from Euston to Trafalgar Square, to Covent Garden and so on. Of the theatres that I was after I easily managed to find the Phoenix and the Queens, and I stumbled across the Arts by accident. The only theatre I visited which took some effort to find was the Gillian Lynne.

Possibly not the real intention of this thread, but I was once asked by some Americans if I could direct them to the Dress Circle Theatre. I’d never heard of it, and they showed me a ticket. They actually needed to be at the Piccadilly Theatre, and of course the ticket had Dress Circle written in large bold lettering in the centre, with Piccadilly Theatre written in small lettering at the top. I pointed out the nearby Piccadilly Theatre, and explained that the Dress Circle is where they would sit. As I left them they looked very bewildered and unconvinced. For the record, Judi Dench was performing in Filumena at the Piccadilly.

Oh and I once exited Waterloo Station via the wrong exit and got lost and took me ages to find the Old Vic 😂
I did exactly this the first time I went to the Old Vic (which was rather a long time ago now).
I did it the first time I went to the Young Vic too.

As a youngster, I regularly spent time looking at the London A-Z to find theatre locations (I lived out in the sticks, there was nothing better to do!).
I now navigate all of central London by theatre - eg To get to Folyes, Leicester Square tube and up past the Palace and the Phoenix.

Bit embarrassed to admit to this one,but here goes...booked Bugsy Malone two summers ago in Kids’ Week and like a complete fool was heading nonchalantly,with my family in tow,down Shaftesbury Avenue to the Lyric Theatre.The show was not on there,of course...but at the Lyric,Hammersmith...Doh! By the way, it is a lovely theatre and we did make it on time.

Was it The Vaults one that alot of people struggle with? I seem to recall alot of confusion when Hair was on?

I’ve only been there once to watch King Kong. If a theatre ever needed signposting to find your way there then the Vaults theatre would be my number 1 choice. |

I once walked into the Lyric Theatre instead of the Apollo to see Jamie. It took more time then I would like to admit to figure out I was wrong.

Adding another vote for The Vaults/Vaults Theatre, I've been a few times over the last couple years on scattered trips and never find it easily!

I wonder how many people are caught out by theatres with similar names like the Apollo and the Apollo Victoria for example Regularly - and I've been in the foyer in the mornings where people have come into the box office for "Jamie" wanting "Wicked" tickets. Public theatre ticket agency review sites are full of folk moaning they missed the start of the show by going to the wrong one as well. That's the fault of the patrons, the address is clearly written on the ticket and the signage is quite clear. |

I got lost inside the Barbican once, and ended up late for the play even though I'd been in the building 15 minutes before it started.

The Shaftesbury is a bit of an awkward one for me, as it's at the arse end of Shaftesbury Avenue, away from the sort of "hub" that is the Lyric/Gielgud/Queens etc. I think it may actually be closer to Holborn than Piccadilly Circus actually. Another awkward one is the Palace Theatre, Manchester. It's kind of not really near anything, i.e. it's away from what people would think of as Manchester city centre (Piccadilly Gardens, The Arndale, Albert Square). I remember getting lost trying to find my way back to it after shopping pre-Wicked, so I just gave up and got an (expensive) taxi. Also, the Arts Theatre is a bit of a weird one. I know it's near Leicester Square station, but I can never really remember which intersection of Charing Cross Road it is on. Yeah the Palace Theatre is always way further down Oxford St in Manchester than you think it’s gonna be or remeber it to be, or where it probably should be! 😆 The Manchester Opera House is better located! I also still have bad bad memories of the palace theatre from falling down the stairs from the top tier when my friends and I went to see the rocky horror show! Bruises for weeks 😩😄 |
