I’ve seen two Yael Farber productions - the Crucible at the Old Vic and Hamlet at the Gate in Dublin. Absolutely loved both of them. So puzzled by this negative feeling towards her You should have seen Salome or Knives in Hens. Both truly awful.
The Crucible was enjoyable because the play is wonderful, but I found the scene changes painfully slow and pointless in a very self indulgent style. It was also extremely long at four hours. I've seen much better productions of the play in half that time

Well I didn't.
Guess we all have different tastes, which is great, but the day I went the Olivier was less than half full and people were leaving half way through. For me it was terrible and I believe quite a few people felt the same.

theatre just ain't a director's medium. I tend to book for the writer and the actors, and I missed a generation of theatre so those I grew up watching have retired or gone off the boil somewhat, and I'm learning who to watch and who to avoid all over again. When you add movement directors and fight directors to the mix too, it all gets a bit muddy. Of the new (to me) directors, I look out for Bijan Sheibani and Matthew Xia.

I look out for Bijan Sheibani and Matthew Xia. Without wanting to teach you how to suck eggs, do you know Matthew Xia was (relatively) recently appointed as an Associate Artist at Nottingham Playhouse? He directed Shebeen last year, and this year he's directing One Night in Miami.

Yes, though it's not a theatre I've been able to get to, unfortunately. He was at the Manchester RX, which is where I've seen his work.
