So in both Stage and Screen Musicals, a lot of Actors tend to receive high praise that can lead to award wins, nominations and other such honours. For the most part, people are deserving and have given successful performances that earn the awards, but sometimes, you just wonder, how on Earth did that performance, or role, get honoured? The reason I ask this is I was reading up on the film adaptation of Oliver and was shocked to find that Hugh Griffith, for his role as the Magistrate in Oliver's trial, was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor award at the Golden Globes. Now, he was perfectly fine, but how on earth is that role worthy of an award like that!
So what award nominated or winning performances have confused you, in both musicals of stage and screen?

Most recently, David Bedella for In the Heights. I was surprised when he received the Olivier nomination, and genuinely couldn't believe it when he won. It's not that he does anything 'wrong' in the role, it's just not an award-worthy role at all.

That was exactly my first thought too. Have loved him in other things, but didn't see much to his performance in In the Heights at all.

The first two that pop into my head are Michael Ceveris, who won the 2015 Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in Fun Home, and David Bedella, who won the 2016 Olivier for Best Supporting Supporting Actor in a Musical in Fun Home. I may have seen them on bad days, but singing was awful from both of them. I cringed for every song they had to sing. I found David's acting to be mediocre and Michael's acting to be dreadful. As I said, I may have seen them on bad days where they may have just been tired.

Wow, very much disagree about Michael Cerveris, I think that performance is in my top 10 on stage ever.
Can understand where people are coming from with David Bedella though.
