Sheridan Smith isn't just a celebrity, is she? I count her as a proven musical actress. Wrong? That wasn't my point. My point was about the fans of any celebrity casting regardless of their track record.

Let us not forget, everyones favourite leading lady Kimberley Walsh, came from a reality TV show to get into Girls Aloud! Now, although I've never seen Kimberley in a role on stage, I look at her slightly differently too. She did forge a decent career from Girls Aloud, who were, arguably still popular until their indefinite hiatus. Though saying that, she is using theatre in the same way to keep her career going, so maybe she's not all that different. I have to say that actually, when it all comes down to it, is whether: a) A performer is actually a best fit for a certain role, X Factor or not b) They provide quality to the character they are representing and c) It is a cheap gimmick or not to get bums on seats, hiring faces that the general public will by tickets to see. If it is the case of C, then I sincerely do despair for the future of theatre. If it's merely a ploy just to appeal to the masses then we're sailing dangerously close to seeing Gemma Collins on stage farting the national anthem. Five stars.

I am speaking merely to bring up the point of Kimberley, should of said that, I actually really liked her onstage, both in Shrek and Elf haha.

For me, when I pay to see a musical I want to see musical theatre actors appear. They spend years and years training in acting, singing and dancing, and when they leave drama school they are fully prepared for the job. Popstars from xfactor etc can be good (Matt Cardle was great in Memphis, Gareth Gates was a great Marius in Les Mis) but not always. They often have a pop sound not a musical theatre one, they're often not prepared for the demands of 8 shows a week, their presence often equates to a more concert-ish vibe for some audience members who just want to gawk at a celebrity. And I don't like the mentality of 'well, my pop career isn't taking off so I guess I'll do a musical instead.' because there are thousands of talented and passionate trained actors really to take on roles because they want to, and they are passionate about musical theatre, not because they see it as a back up option afforded to them by the overblown platform that gave us Wagner and Jedward. Yes, these talent shows do produce some fabulous singers, and some trained mt people have entered them before as well, but I don't think that appearing on a talent show via open audition, is really the same as devoting your teenage and early adult life to training in the field of musical theatre. I know there are exceptions, but personally when I pay £30+ for a ticket, I want to be safe in the knowledge that the stars are going to be 100% up to the job. I don't want to see a great singer with 0 acting chops, mincing his way through a 2 1/2 hour show while the audience laughs obnoxiously at every remotely amusing line of dialogue spoken. Can you tell I've been burned before? Amber Riley. Never done a musical in her life.

But Amber isn't from a reality tv show. She is from a musical comedy-drama show. This being a show that went on two concert tours, one of which was worldwide. And she got stellar reviews in The Wiz! Live.

Cough*Martine McCutcheon*Cough I agree with you with the not the same, but at least she has the experience of going on a worldwide concert tour and having to do about 4/5 shows a week which she can bring to the project.

I think there are lots of good reality stars in shows.
My favourite is defiantly Alexandra Burke in The Bodyguard! She is amazing and has got a stellar voice and good acting skills.
Also Matt Henry is amazing in Kinky Boots. You can't fault some great performers just because they've been on the X factor!
I think also it's a way of getting some people in to see the show as they star "celebrities"

Live. She did American idol before glee. Didn't get through. Some of our best musical stars did straight acting not musical theatre for training. Many of the reality show people have training, but hide it because the voting public wants the plumber to win. Talent shows have been a route to recognition for decades, Victoria wood, Stiles and Drewe, Paul Daniels and Lenny Henry all did them. Doesn't make them lesser.

Ultimately, if you can do the job, it doesn't matter where you come from. Talent shows get looked down on because some people consider it a "cheat", a shortcut to avoid training, but there's definitely people who've trained but enter the talent shows anyway because a foot in the door is a foot in the door is a foot in the door. And even if they haven't trained, refer back to my opening sentence. If someone is "only" good enough for a talent show and not the West End stage, then truth will out *very* quickly.

Olivier winner Matt Henry on the voice! Zoe Birkett, Darius Danesh, Will Young and Gareth Gates from Pop Idol (the entire top 4) Very true, but Matt Henry did have professional Musical Theatre training before hi stint on the voice if that makes any difference.

It doesn't to me. I judge on their performance on the day. I've seen professionally trained people be sub-par. Some of them frequently. I shan't name any of them but it happens.

Samantha Barks, Jessie Buckley, Aoife someone who was in Chicago came from one of those let's cast a show shows, either Dorothys or Marias. I think these are a separate category too. The wonderful siobhan dillon also came from one of these shows The casting shows are different. Most people on the female ones had gone for training , or went for it after. The ones who didn't, and have been very successful have done very well on innate talent learning on the job . You couldn't now really split the difference between the ones with firsts from top colleges, or those who learnt performing difficult, roles. If anything there may a problem with some very good people on those shows who still didn't get picked up enough on their talent. Its different with the x factor graduates, pop stars and Corrie stars. Some seem to get picked on the name and potential audience pull, Some are terrible, and there's plenty of better pros out there. Others have similar training to anyone else, or prove naturals . Some - like Diana Vickers - just proved to have skills, and a vocal range, that no one would have guessed at from watching them on the X factor If anything the PTB have been slow to spot where they might be fully used. I don't think dud casting is entirely due to name casting either. Its due to dud casting - from dull Elphabas, to wimpy Mariuses, to invisible Cosettes to overaged Christines. Theres too much top talent being unused at the moment - only some of it is due to bad name casting.

From what I have heard Amber will not be doing all 8 shows, she will have an alternate for at least 1 performance a week. Although this may just be hearsay.
I also don't have a problem with so called "stunt casting" as long as that person can take the hack of the 8 shows a week and do so with the expertise of someone who is trained to do 8 shows. I can't deal with these celebs who come in and take more shows off than they actually perform
