I watched today’s performance and had a great time. The cast were great with some great vocal talent on show. As it was my first time seeing both this show and attending this theatre, I didn’t know what to expect on either front. In relation to the theatre, because it is such an intimate venue, it was great being so up close to the cast, particularly during the musical numbers. The staging consisted of blocks of steel bars on wheels to represent the various prison cells.
Cast wise, I couldn’t fault them vocally, though the musical numbers were a mixed bag. I enjoyed the Act 2 numbers more, with “Sorry” and “Every Night” being the most emotionally charged, though we did get some great comedy via “A-List” and “First Lady”.
Acting wise, Hayley-Jo Whitney as Yvonne Atkins was a particular highlight. From her entrance to her exit she was just so funny, but could flip it to a more edgier side to her character when required. It was also great to see one of the cast members from the tv show as well.
We had a band of 4 (keys, Reed, bass and drums) which was great to listen to.
A nice afternoon at the theatre and I’d certainly be attending future productions at this theatre in the future.
