Fair play to the RSC, they've come back very quickly. I suspect the real story may lie somewhere between the two extremes (in that there will be redundancies but it's not quite as scorched earth as Stuke's making it sound).

Sounds like they may be planning to outsource this work and transfer people currently directly employed by the RSC?

Because putting vital tasks in the hands of people who have no emotional engagement in your success always works out well, doesn't it?

It is always a lie to say that 'no final decisions' have been taken yet - as the decision to make this change has been taken at management level, they are just going through the process before implementation.
They know what they want to achieve - it is just about ticking boxes.
To be honest, there does appear to be a fair amount of bloat within the RSC. Whether this is the right area for cuts/changes is another matter. But they should be seeking to be as efficient as possible to free up maximum resources for the core activity - which should be putting on good theatre.

Wouldn't disagree with you and in fact its interesting that in the recent programmes they have stopped listing the entire staff as they used to and have just focused on "core" staff.

I worked at the RSC a couple of times. A lot of people on my Facebook are up in arms about this. Certainly the message about decisions not yet being made seems to conflict with what employees have been told.
Stage door keepers are so important to the wellbeing of a company and keep a building well oiled. Stupid decision just to save some money.

Didn't something similar happen recently at the Globe? See also that time the Young Vic got shot of its entire front of house and box office team and replaced them with a much reduced 'welcome team'. Fair to say it wasn't dealt with in the most professional way according to this angry blog youngvicushersunite.blogspot.com/?m=1

What happened to these staff when the Theatre was being updated and the RSC moved to The Other Place?
The RSC seem to have a fair number of front of house security staff but a number of them only seem to come on for the shows to do bag checks etc.

Outsourcing security makes sense as it is a specialised area and one where the training, systems, and infrastructure is not a core skill set of making Theatre and developing the skill set in-house would be an unnecessary drain on resources.
The outsourcing of any core Theatrical activity is a different matter, to lose control of the primary contact points with your Customers and in the case of the backstage staff who support the creative process is short sighted, as mentioned above where does the sense of belonging and feeeling you belong and contribute to the success of the company go.
Whenever I visit the RSC all the staff I meet appear passionate and proud to work for the RSC.
Cannot see the financial imperative, cost savings never materialise as forecasted, in the Private sector outsourcing is an accounts fudge to move the cost from one page of the P&L to another to pacify shareholders.

The RSC seem to have a number of security/stage door staff not like some theatres where the main SD person has sometimes been in situ for 20 to 30 years. I know of some who have done maybe 35 years.
