Having seen this tonight (thanks to a discounted Today Tix ticket), it was certainly a very powerful and thought provoking 90 minute piece of theatre leading to a dramatic and shocking conclusion
Set in a police station, a young mixed race man is missing. His parents are desparate to find out what has happened to him. What unfolds is an unflinching and at times an honest examination of the impact both of parenting a child and of racial identity in todays society. Certainly, there are plenty of racial comments and language used which are very shocking at times, but also in certain scenes used a a comedic tool to make a particular point.
The cast where fantastic, though for me the standout performances came from the the two parents - Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale. It’s the first time I’ve seen Jeremy Jordan on stage and thought he came across well as the young police officer trying to offer help to the parents.
Overall, it’s definitely not an easy watch, but does offer some humour which due to the nature of the play could be seen as offensive. I was quite surprised at the large number of empty seats in the Mezz (where I was sat) at tonight’s show. I don’t know how busy the orchestra section was. There definitely wouldn’t of been an issue of getting rush tickets for this. Hopefully there will be better attendances later in the run.
A good night at the theatre. 4*
