Saw the Dress tonight and absolutely hated the production which went totally against the music and libretto.
Any thoughts from others who were also there?

Not sure why they decided to stage Salome when the ROH did it just earlier this year
Won't be seeing it as it looks like they have butchered it
I wonder who their demographic is for these productions

Strange dance of the seven veils by Melanie Lane in this production the choreography appeared amateurish. I checked some of her work on YouTube which is considerably better than what she dished up for this.

I saw this tonight, and have to say I really enjoyed it. Yes, the production is a little crazy in parts. I did not understand why there was a headless My Little Pony on stage for instance, or why the King was dressed in a Santa Claus outfit. However, it is not without merit, and there are many other reasons to see the final performance of this next week.
Firstly, and most importantly Allison Cook’s central performance. It is quite simply stunning! I could not take my eyes off of her when she was onstage, and quite a lot of the time this was when she wasn’t actually singing! I don’t think I have ever seen such a physical performance from an opera singer onstage before. Her movements at times were serpentine. I truly believed her as the young Salome. Not to mention her fantastic voice, which she coloured beautifully. The other cast do a sterling job, but are overshadowed by Cook in my opinion.
Secondly, the opera itself is a masterpiece of writing. There is not one moment wasted, or dramatically inert moment. The music, whilst having no take away tunes, fits the drama perfectly. I am still trying to wrap my head around some of its meaning.
The ENO Orchestra played the score wonderfully under Martyn Brabbins.
The one hour fifty minute running time absolutely flew by for me. It is definitely worth giving this SALOME a chance.
