Got to thinking... what is the best and greatest theatre poster of all time?
For me Cats would be up in my top ten but probably my best loved would be the artwork for the 60s production of Hair. It’s the first one I remember even though I wasn’t even born!

Without missing a beat my immediate thoughts went to the recent Angels in America revival at the National, just stunning.

Not sure about favourite ever but I absolutely love the one they've done for The Inheritance's transfer to the Noël Coward.

The original Martin Guerre - is it a face or a man?
In fact, a lot of the designs from Dewynters at that time were very clever and class in my favourites

The 1993 Grease poster is pretty cool as is the 1994 Oliver!

My favourite ... Barry Humphries , An Evenings Intercourse, Drury Lane and U.K. tour 1982.
Then there’s the original Sweeney Todd poster , Broadway and Drury Lane .
I also love many of the dayglo type posters from the 1960s , so beautiful , not exactly “clever” posters , but then there’s the nostalgia associated with them as well.
Good thread btw, interesting to see what type of poster people like

I really like my Cabaret one from the most recent revival at Studio 54. The image from the beginning of the show through the door is haunting.

Cats is one of my favourites, but there are too many I remember to say that one is the favourite. The fact that I remember them shows they were outstandingly effective.
(What's going on here? A thread on "favourite theatre poster" and nobody has nominated themselves? What's wrong with you all?)

I also agree the one of Cats, the slogan ‘now and forever’ is veryclever too. Loved also at the London Palladium revival, when they projected those massive Cats eyes at the end, they didn’t repeat that in New York.
The Phantom of the Opera with a picture of the mask, with the slogan ‘Tonight Belongs To The Phantom.’
Also love the Kinky Boots poster.
Oddly enough the two biggest hits in London now Hamilton and Book of Mormon, both their posters leave me cold.

Oh, "Cats" for sure. The surprise of realising the pupils are dancers. The face in the helicopter for the "Miss Saigon" one was pretty close, though. OMG, I never noticed until you mentioned it and vabbian shared the pic lol. |
