April to October I live in cargo shorts and not much else (I am wearing cargo shorts in the photo I attached to a few posts above this one with my grubby work boots). The perks of being in the bear community, I can wear boots, cargo shorts, vests/tshirts and plaid and be the pinnacle of fashion.
I’ve also got to this amazing stage in my life where I honestly don’t care what people think of the way I look and it’s fantastic. You should all try it sometime.

Sat next to me at the National on Saturday were Father and son who kept their baseball caps on the entire time. What is it about these unnecessary hats that men and boys feel they can never take them off? No different to girls and women who pile their hair up on their heads too (and men who have a top knot rather than a man bun). The baseball cap I can just about take. The split ends I can't.

Personally I would never wear shorts in the theatre. Just doesn't feel right.

My views on this matter are already well known by some. A gentleman should never, ever wear jeans or a T-shirt to the theatre. If you wouldn't wear it to a wedding, you shouldn't wear it to the theatre! For real?! Thank gawd we're not still living in the 1950's!

I know you are half serious but that is rubbish im afraid. Not especially. The baseball cap fits quite close to the head and if they are facing the front, the peak doesn't ruin anyone's view other than the wearer, the bun or the hair tied up on the top of someone's head is far more invasive I find, particularly if it's quite loosely tied with bits of hair everywhere.

Can I assume slightly different rules apply if it is outdoor theatre? Not on weather related but also there are only certain clothes i'm happy sitting on the ground in when it's somewhere like the globe. That said I've worn shorts to indoor theatre and on a few occasions even sandals. My family have looked puzzled in the past as I leave and queried if I was in fact going to the theatre in my jeans and fleece but it's generally all about waiting on that cold station or ability of said clothes to withstand rain or despairing running for rapidly leaving trains.
I agree about large hair styles, anything impeding the view for the people behind needs flattening.

It is quite obviously nothing to do with the ruining of anyone's view but the fact that the hat should be removed once indoors, its basic etiquette.

I usually wear my hair in a ponytail and do become conscious if I’m at the theatre or cinema without tiered seating, so I take it down. Unfortunately I also have quite thick hair and in this weather it sometimes becomes unbearably hot when it is down.

Hats in the theatre, eh? If I go to the Opera house in the opera season There's someone sure to shout at me without the slightest reason If I go to a Concert Hall to have a jolly spree There's someone in the party who is sure to shout at me. Where did you get that hat? Where did you get that tile? Isn't it a nobby one and just the proper style. I should like to have one just the same as that.' Wherever I go they shout 'Hello, where did you get that hat?' Ahh, the Good Old Days...!

But coats and jackets should also be removed once indoors but I see many a theatregoer keeping their jacket on. I don't expect the great unwashed to follow any kind of etiquette anymore anyway. So long as I can sort of rub along with it, I'll work with it. And maybe (probably) bitch about it afterwards and probably laugh at them. That's why I can take a cap within reason but long hair is just a no-no.

It's not just the warm weather that brings out inappropriate theatre gear.
Try sitting behind a row of bobble hats or people with huge scarfs wrapped up to their ears!

As long as people's clothing is clean and they don't wear things that will make them sweat heavily and impinge on their fellow audience members' sense of smell, then people should wear what they want. Depending on how wacky the ensemble is, you might get some looks, but then again I think people who dress like that in the first place are there to be seen

It's lucky I'm not going anywhere this evening because in this heat I've already shed more than is appropriate for an auditorium. If it gets any hotter I'm going to take my skin off.

I'm in two minds about alot of it. I think people ahould be able to wear what they want. GRee flip flops are a no, but if a vest is styled out as part of an overall look someone is going for, then fair play. However you can usually tell someone who has gone for a style and look rather than someone who has just thrown it on. My usual look is skinny jeans and a short or long sleeved shirt open with a t shirt underneath, but that is just because that is my personal style and what I like to wear.

This what to wear thing is getting out of hand. Some schools now ruing that everyone wears trousers now. Does that include the teachers I wonder? If pervs, pupils or teachers , are looking up kids' skirts, then stop them doing it. Don’t try to control women.

I'm not saying that I agree with a total ban on skirts but aren't some of those schools enforcing a ban on skirts in an effort to be more gender neutral or because those schools have high percentages of muslim students and so the modesty question comes into play? It's not all about perverts or controlling women is it?

In my opinion a ‘gender neutral’ uniform should be allowing skirts and trousers for boys, girls and everyone in between that, not leaving just one option

Surely the fact that some schools are thinking about this kind of thing nowadays is good? And some schools are doing it because of their muslim pupil population where skirts are the issue (whoever they are worn by).

So, teeny anecdote from my past. Yawn. At school we wore skirts and one day they told us we had to measure the distance the hem came from the floor when we kneeled down and we were to have the hem only an inch, I think it was, above the knee. This was because we were told..in all seriousness...our school porter, the only man in the school at that time ( porter meant caretaker ) was troubled by our short skirts. I don’t think this delayed my development much 😂
My point is that then one man who couldn’t keep his eyes on the caretaking, dictated how 500 girls should dress. Why should girls put up with this now? If Muslim girls wish to wear trousers, fine. What with this weather I would have thought trousers not the first choice! So summer/ winter dichotomy in U.K. may come into play. What I object to is this kind of unthinking reactive rule making that institutions engage in these days. I hope some lads like the lovely ones last year all turn up in skirts. Confused? Yes, and so are our young people.
