My last Rolo, however, remains MINE. You know you can just go out and buy more, right?

Why are you all buying ice cream - isn't there a bar?
(One of the reasons I go to the theatre is being able to drink wine and mentally file it under 'generous act of charity to support the arts'.)

I'd be more inclined to splash out occasionally (only in warm weather - I don't see the need for ice cream much of the year in the UK) if the flavours weren't so boring and familiar. You can bet they will be chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, and if there is anything slightly less hackneyed it will only be of the caramel/ginger variety - nothing really interesting, unusual or tempting. I've had lovely regional ice cream when on holiday in the UK, such as orange-and-mascarpone, but not a glimpse of anything so refreshingly different in theatres.

Ice cream or toilet.
Is there really the time to navigate the queues for both?!

Regents Park Open Air do all different ones like the Orange and Mascarpone (only remember that as that’s the one I had), wish more of the ‘standard’ West End theatres starting selling them too.

I’d put you down as an eton mess type, or maybe a treacle?

There was utter UPROAR from the WNO regulars when the WMC changed their Ice Cream supplier. Opera crowd loves them a ginger flavoured ice cream we learned. (it made bugger all difference, they have to suck it up and have mint choc chip now).
Perks of doing the ice cream sales though: if one gets opened/veers too close to expiry you get to fight with your colleagues over who is going to scarf it down before someone finds you another job to do.

Honestly, BurlyBeaR, all those others have been around for aeons now, too, and though I like "proper" Eton mess, I can't stand the synthetic meringue in the ice cream version.

Theatres should announce intervals with a ice cream van jingle and then serve up a Mr Whippy. Only choice should be whether to have a flake inserted.

They're only £2.50 at the Royal & Derngate in Northampton where I volunteer. Plus you get the added bonus of meeting me, which quite frankly makes it a bargain 😉

Indeed, @ryan, birthday & Xmas gifts are banned unless approved in advance. I'm very lucky as it is & at my age I need to discard possessions, not add to them. Though "experiences" - eg unusual ice cream - are welcome!

Before deciding whether to buy an ice cream in London's glittering West End, we should perhaps first ask the usher on what type of contract they are employed.
They may be earning a flat rate of £34.93, regardless of sales, or they could be earning the lower rate of £31.29 plus commission.
I've done the math, and based on a 3 3/4 hour shift, neither is higher than the London Living Wage.

Because that doesn't seem creepy at all. No sir. Hello little usher, how are you? Before I decide whether to make purchase from your lovely box of delights and bolster your coffers, may I get a bit fiscal with you and ask you about your hourly rate? No wait. Usher! Come back! I just wanted to check whether you were getting enough from your boss! Sorry officer, get your hands off me at once. Ouch. I'm allowed ONE phone call!

I think you'd probably phrase it more as "does it benefit you personally if I buy an ice-cream, or am I sound to just get myself a McFlurry after?".

Yet another consideration to factor into the "Shall I buy an ice cream?" dilemma, but I think it's a fair point and in restaurants, before paying the bill I always ask the staff (discreetly) how tips are treated, and I then try to do whatever's best for them, e.g. leave the service in cash even if I'm paying the bill by card.

Tesco Metro 1min from Kings Glasgow, just go out with the smokers. 4 Cornettos for a £1. Two each - perfect in this hot weather. Most Theatres must have supermarket chain round the corner.

I once bought a box of Calippos from a supermarket on an INCREDIBLY hot day, but could only manage 4 so had to palm the other 2 off on a nearby dad. No regrets!

I usually get a programme, a bottle of water and an ice cream. The prices are a bit shocking to be honest. At ATG theatres, programmes are £4, water is £2.50 (for unknown brand) and ice cream is £4 (also unknown brand). They add 20-50p to these prices in West End theatres.
My favourite theatre (Festival Theatre Edinburgh) charges £4 for programmes still, but £1.50 for water (Highland Spring brand) and £3 for ice cream (Mackie’s) which I think is a bit fairer.
The prices are quite frankly a joke and I think it is honestly to make profits in the often boiling theatres.
