Why is everyone suddenly so sniffy about our homegrown West End theatre awards?
The Tonys are for Broadway.
They are both equally valid - unless we all subscribe to the view that unless its American it has no real value.

I believe people are mostly referring to the quality of the ceremonies themselves, not the validity of the awards. Although it is true that a Tony is seen as more impressive in popular culture, just as an Oscar is seen as more impressive than a BAFTA and so on.

I wonder what the pay comparisons are to host the Tony Awards vs the Oliviers? I remember Alan Cumming saying after he hosted that he didn't really enjoy it and he was paid a very low sum. It surprised me as it's such a big prestigious event!

I agree Steve, but it is definitely bottom of the pile of the big American awards ceremonies - EGOT + Golden Globes, SAG & and all of the other music awards...

The big difference between Oscars/Emmys/BAFTAs and Tonys/Oliviers is that the former can be seen globally, in your cinema or your living room and their awards are judging the exact same thing. Theatre awards are about something specific to a location and, at most, they are judging two versions of the same production but, more often, have a completely very different pool from which to choose nominees.
