I really hope this doesn't seem like a really pointless thread to start but i'm looking for some help... Since moving to London mid-September I have let my hair grow and grow. I am looking like Sue Perkins and have been told it isn't really my style. I am a student living in Lewisham so don't want to splash out crazy amounts for haircuts and need some advice of any good places! I have stumbled across good reviews for Ted's Grooming room which, for £32, appears to give a very extensive experience. I just need a nice, simple cut and preferably form a good relationship with the hairdresser so I can return again and again! Any help is very much appreciated. |

You need to connect with someone who lives in your patch. I’m not able to help. My hairdresser of many years decided to go back to Australia. I might have managed Austria but..so I’m now going to a very expensive player, brilliant cut but am ashamed to say how much.

I have stumbled across good reviews for Ted's Grooming room which, for £32, appears to give a very extensive experience. stevehamilton I get it that this is expensive but speaking from personal experience, do everything you can and shave your shackles and go. It is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! It's Turkish barbering. In terms of just hairdressing, they first wash your hair and spend (what seems like a long time) cutting, trimming and styling your hair the way that you want. They will also pull each finger and massage your shoulders. Afterwards they wash your hair and then flame your ears. Men grow hair in their ears so they have a large metal cotton bus like utensil which they ignight with a cigarette lighter which they then tap against your ears. Smell that burning hair! Afterwards (quite simply) you feel sensational! Yes, it's expensive but in all honesty, I do not know anyone who has been who wasn't just blown away by the whole experience and who haven't continued to go back on a regular basis. Apart from the cost, the only downside is that they don't do appointments, which means you have to wait and when paying they ask if you want to give the barber a tip. Ugh! But you don't have to. You're skint, right? If it helps soften the blow in terms of the cost, if you register with a branch by giving them your email they will give you 25% for life. They also do 50% off hot towel shaves in the morning. Hope this helps |

You need to find a convenient branch of Mr Topper's. There are quite a few dotted over central London. The branch in Soho is behind the Palace Theatre, opposite Ed's Easy Diner.

Recent convo with offspring who became a student in September: Me: You haven't been home for a couple of weeks so I take it you've worked out how to use the hall of residence washing machine at last. Her: Oh you've got to be joking. Me: What? You must have run out of socks and knickers by now. Her: Well, I did, so I went out and bought some more. Locally, I can recommend Chaplin's in Deptford (they also have a branch in Crofton Park, though I've never been there - I assume it's decent too). A cut is £13.50, and they've generally been good for me. If you can, try and book Mem, he's the owner, and the first time I went in he gave me a lot of advice on what would work for me, and then on how to care for the cut he'd done. But they're generally all good. Book an appointment on their website. |

Have you tried your local college as they may have students who will do it for a fiver (or as you are a man for free)
It isn't as dreadful as it sounds. Their tutors are nearby and whilst it takes forever I've never had a bad cut as an expert guided the trainee (who can often be Level 3 so not new to hair at all)

Have you tried your local college That's a really good suggestion. I wish I'd made it! I used to get my hair cut for free at an training academy. Although it does take longer, you probably get a more thorough job (no smut please). |
