I'm having a think about songs that are about music, and I was wondering what musicals songs we can think of between us that are about music.
It could be about music or songs in anyway - how great music is, how bad it is, about a singer, a song, about listening to music. Not just about dancing though!
So far I've come up with The Sound of Music and Do Re Mi, but there must be lots more songs about music in the world of musicals!

"Make the Most of Your Music" from the re-written 1987 London production of Follies would fit your description (even though it didn't fit the production ) "Hot Patootie" from the Rocky Horror Show - I really love that rock n' roll! "Electric Blues" from HAIR - and old fashioned melllllllll-o-dy...

"I Love A Piano", which I saw in a stage production of White Christmas, though it's not in the film.

Irving Berlin wrote a zillion songs that are either specifically about music (I Love a Piano (which Dawnstar mentioned), Slap That Bass, Alexander's Ragtime Band, Let Me Sing and I'm Happy) or that use music as a metaphor (A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody, You Keep Coming Back Like a Song), but most of those were written either for a movie or as a stand-alone popular song, not for a musical. I've been wracking my brain to try to think of a Berlin music-related song that was written for the stage, and all I can come up with is Say It With Music, from the Music Box Revue of 1921.
For another oldie, how about Rodgers and Hart's Johnny One-Note, from Babes in Arms?
