I see Benjamin Whitrow has died - a very good actor, particularly in comedy, who I saw often at the NT and RSC. I remember him being a particularly good Justice Shallow. I last saw him at the Finborough in "Flowering Cherry" in 2015 when he was in his late 70s. but still very skilled. From the obituaries it seems he was a somewhat unconventional character off stage which only adds to his charm.

One of those actors we have all seen in things, who has worked with all the major companies, big stars over the years but we may not have been immediately able to put a face to the name as they weren't quite household names or had a long running signature part on TV.
He certainly had a long and distinguished career on both stage and screen and was working to a high level right up to the end of his career as Jan says. Also as Jan states unusually for a performer his private life was perhaps more colourful and original than the sort of parts which became his stock in trade on stage and screen.
