I soon figured out that if they'd studied classics they'd almost certainly gone to private school. Or the type of W*nky ex-grammar comp that I went to, that clung on to its "classics" so it could pretend it had some standards. Actually, that's slightly unfair. I got the chance to study Latin. Hard, but one of the most useful things I ever did, if I'm totally honest. Plus I got to find out about Ovid. OI do find Classicists the most up their own Ovid of the academic crowd. Now I'm of the opinion 'all learning is good learning' but even I have to draw a line at the general usefulness in life of 'Classics' and Latin on an everyday basis.

Who is still a friend, and was actually doing classics for her degree - that's why it was my barometer, they'd inevitably tell her they'd done classics at school when she told them it was her degree subject. It does seem to be dying out as a subject in the comprehensive system.

I have to draw a line at the general usefulness in life of 'Classics' and Latin on an everyday basis It came in invaluable during A-Level Law. After having to memorise 400 lines of Latin text over a year for O-Level Latin, sorting out your Actus Reum from your Mens Rea (no, not that, Ryan) was a piece of p*ss and left the rest of the class way behind. Beyond that, my spelling improved considrabley and it made Spanish and Italian just that bit easier to understand. And Ovid the writer is a total laugh - depressive randy old goat. Dumbledore in a toga - the bits Rowling left out, basically. Was that intenshenal?

Had my second 'first day of the year' and I've got to say how in the space of a few months security in a London university has changed. We had a few different entrances and you could always stroll in, everyone carried ID cards in pockets as it was only ever normally at 9am you'd need it and then you could just flash it out your pocket and put it back. Today though, just one entrance and you have to wear your ID and lanyard, even after passing security. Amazing to think how drastically things can change so shortly and I was expecting it at all, but not a surprising move come to think of it and some one would say probably surprising it has only just been introduced.
