My taste in films seems not quite aligned to that of others here, but I liked this, though the action was rather drawn out in both senses, ie film itself and the historic 1980 Wimbledon men's final. I must have known the result at the time but had forgotten, so for me the suspense was genuine.

I agree, yet Shia LaBoeuf, who plays McEnroe, did not in the least remind me of his own real life counterpart. However, at the end you do see photos of the real people so you could compare them (though they were too small for me to do so) - maybe this was deliberate?

It must be the season for tennis films. They are likes buses! There's one doing the rounds about Billie Jean King playing Bobbie Riggs, called Battle of the Sexes. It's written by Simon Beaufoy, of Full Monty fame.

I was there at Borgs breakthrough final vs Ille Nastase in 1976. Borg is only a couple of years older than I am and I was cheering him, even though he played pretty boring tennis compared to the swashbuckling Romanian.
However, the real reason was because I hated Nastase long before it became fashionable to do so. It may well have something to do with the strong rumour that the impossibly beautiful daughter of the man down the street (from his first marriage), was his mistress. She was much closer to my age than his and I can still recall several times when I lost the power of speech as she smiled and said Hello to me.
I took real joy at him being banned earlier this year.
(Sorry but felt the need to share my teenage angst).
