For some light relief, can anyone else think of any marketing campaigns gone wrong?

I wonder if this was really a mistake or just a way to get retweets/attention?
As for Things That Went Wrong: The Japanese clothes chain UniQlo had a problem on their hands when they tried to go to Germany as Qlo sounds pretty much exactly like Klo, the German word for loo. So UniQlo basically sounds like shorthand for Unisex Toilet...

The Waterstone's tweets were clearly a joke, they're fairly well known for their amusing tweets (or were before the Oxford St branch disappeared).
My favourite was Susan Boyle's album release, they decided to have a Susan Album Party on Twitter, #SusanAlbumParty. I'll leave you guys to figure out what could possibly go wrong there...

Was it Waterstones that started that? Ha. I was aware of the hashtag but not its origins.

Oh sorry, those were two unrelated paragraphs, I didn't mean to imply Waterstone's created the hashtag. I seem to recall SuBo's PR people themselves came up with the hashtag without realising the possibilities, though part of me does wonder if that's an origin story simply too good to be true...

All this would be a marvellous basis for campaigning for more language teaching in schools. Especially slang!

Reminds me of all the Aussie temps we had working at Shell Centre in the 70s. One girl was perturbed as she had gone to a shop wanting sellotape & asked for her favourite Aussie brand - Durex.

I loved those Waterstones tweets. The fact that people are recirculating and enjoying them shows that it's advertising done properly.
For advertising campaigns gone wrong I'd point in the direction of anything on afternoon television. The target demographic appears to be people who have tried watching wet paint dry and then tried watching dry paint stay dry and they still find it too much excitement to handle.

I have been trying for 2 hours and give up. I don't get it....... Ahem. Imagine someone named Su. She's having a sort of a party. Su's analbum party Now there's a space I've missed somewhere. Needless to say, Su didn't get too many RSVPs.

Which brings us to the traditional sign at the hospital: "Family Planning: use rear entrance".

I think Rolls Royce had a similar problem when they wanted to name a car the "Mist." Means something quite different auf Deutsch slang, apparently. Haha, yea, I can see how that would have gone wrong. Mist isn't even slang, it's the official word for what farmyard animals produce...

Does anyone know if you can get a paper copy of Jeremy Standford's book"Year of the Queen: The Making of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - the Musical" ? I would like to read it but do not have [ or want] a kindle.

I don't know about paper copies, but you can get a free Kindle app for your phone or tablet if that's the only way to get the book but you don't want to buy a Kindle.
