And we're sure to get a public holiday out of it. If not two!

And we're sure to get a public holiday out of it. If not two! Worst case scenario: it happens just as I start a holiday, meaning that (a) I miss out on the extra days off and (b) everywhere is shut so I can't do anything.

Oh I haven't had a chance to catch this and unlikely I will, but did the interview touch on what really happened to their mother by any chance?

That whole period of time was pretty extraordinary, whatever your feelings on the matter. I can't say I was particularly upset but I was saddened that a young girl had been plucked from public obscurity, for reasons we'll probably never fully understand, to marry a future King and then been treated appallingly and died so terribly.
My most abiding memory though is that my two sons, who were 13 and 17, sat with us and watched the whole funeral without any prompting or expectation from us. They didn't say anything, just came and sat on the floor. When I later asked my elder son why, he said "Well, it was big thing wasn't it?"
But, I'm not interested in watching the latest documentaries.

There is zero evidence of conspiracy, same with the Kennedy assassination, 9/11, Sandy Hook and others.
The whole 'conspiracy industry' is one of the most cancerous aspects of contemporary society, all designed to get people to dismiss facts so that others can peddle 'alternatives' for their own benefit (see Infowars etc).
Let the poor woman lie.

The flat Earth theories are particularly mad and gaining traction.

I wasted a good half hour googling the Flat Earth theories this afternoon so I thank you for that (sincerly I was very bored beforehand). I've a friend who constantly shares conspiracy theories about EVERYTHING and god-damnit I'm fond of the boy but when your 'Nazi conspiracy video' passes off footage from Schindler's List as 'WW2 footage' my paitence wears thin....

She had become an embarrassment though. A thorn in the side of the royal family. Whilever she was alive there was no chance of Charles remarrying, the public would have disowned him.
She had to go. So she did.
(Don't even get me started on that unborn child!)

Correlation does not imply causation (see MMR whack jobs for similar). Life is random, attempting to make whatever happens fit a pattern is pointless.

publius thats pretty much where I am with it. I dont doubt that some were genuinely affected by it and felt compelled to display their grief. I do feel there were many more who saw this and decided they should show theirs too because of a perception that they should be doing so. Ive only been compelled to place flowers at one such event, that being the Shoreham airshow disaster. I knew on a passing basis 2 of the lads who died. I was amazed to see so many expensive floral tributes from people with no direct connection and I dont fully grasp the need for public display I've seen some people opine that the collective display of grief wasn't necessarily grief for Diana - that a lot of people were funnelling their grief at the loss of their own loved ones into that public moment because we as a society are usually so bad at expressing it. So, many people feel a solidarity with William and Harry because they were mourning their own mothers through Diana. I'm not completely sure I agree with the theory, but it's an interesting idea. I know my own mum - who had lost both her parents in the preceding five years - was far more upset than me. If William and Harry feel like among all the national brouhaha and press mythologising the real person who was their Mum was lost, I can totally understand them wanting to claim her back. My mum's friend had lost her brother in a car crash and was a huge Diana fan so it was the perfect storm. Whilst I was too young to be taken in by the Diana myth the princes' approach now seems to be in keeping with her approach, very unsubtle damnations of how the Royals do things. When they talk about being made to do things they didn't want to and how they couldn't even discuss it this is an indirect attack on their father and other members of the Royal family. It feels very bold and it shows two men secure not only with what happened but with the fact they will soon be senior royals.
