This was my first visit to the Tristan Bates Theatre so a bit about the venue first -
Well I liked it and will be back if any other shows tickle my fancy (not many have in the past.) Two really lovely middle-aged ladies were running foh/box office and they very helpful and friendly. Seats were a bit uncomfortable (same type as Southwark Playhouse) but the acting space was good with excellent sight-lines and, most of all, there was effective air-con on a warmish afternoon.
The musical was enjoyable but a bit bonkers. A robotic life-coach pops out of an old Bush radio and attempts to 'improve' a couple's boring relationship. I can tell I've probably put you off already and if you didn't enjoy Bat Boy or The Toxic Avenger steer clear. An extremely talented cast, very well drilled, and some rather good songs with witty lyrics (sadly not always audible.) The composer himself was on keyboards, leading a talented 3 piece band, and a handsome chap he is too with a look of a young David Bowie (appropriate given the subject matter.)
