This starts previews tonight in Seattle, and they've released a few videos on YouTube from the rehearsal process - i'm not entirely convinced just yet. They seem to have followed the Heather's 'Dead Gay Son' trope of turning a classic one liner into a pointless musical number - though if the rest of the score was comparable to Heather's then maybe it won't matter?
This has great potential for a musical, and i hope this works (or that if it doesn't, the rights are released for someone else to give it a go!)

That looks horrific. It should turn into a great musical, but then I guess we'd all have different opinions of the sort of style it should have.

It does look horrible. In principle I was for it- but this footage does not sell it at all. And I am simply judging by content, as they don't show any staging.
Also, the leads don't look right to me. Lisa Kudrow and Mura Survno are distinctly different looking than each other. These two girls are so generic looking and indistinguishable from each other. They literally look like chorus girls who have been told to blend in at all times, and finally getting a semi-big gig and not knowing how to stand out as individuals.

I guess we have to assume that's one of the best songs in it. It's OK, but it doesn't feel true to the film. They should go proper 90s for the score. I guess you could argue it's a bit Green Day or even Just A Girl from the original soundtrack but it's not quite enough. I like the look of the costumes, and the choreography looks replicated for Time After Time. I do feel that the impact of that routine will be lost if it's performed amongst a sea of other dance-filled numbers. If anyone should write the music for this it should be Cyndi Lauper. Yes, her score for Kinky Boots is very uneven but it's packed full of great poppy songs, like I feel Romy and Michelle deserves. They seem to have gone a bit too 'traditional musical' from the two songs we've heard and I can't see how that'd work. I'd love to be proven wrong though. |
