Happy memories of watching these at Sunday teatime! Some terrific actors in the casts.

Thanks for that. I've ordered Our Mutual Friend, holiday viewing when it rains. I remember the marvellous casting. Incidentally I've been catching up with Morse. Didn't watch it on its first outing. The casting!!! So brilliant. We watch open mouthed seeing the actors who appear in th early shows , ingenues who go on to become great actors of stage and screen and then in the later ones, established actors obviously fighting to be included in a hit show. Often the murderer is the best actor who goes on to great things. Roger Allam appeared in a later one, looking younger and acting well within himself. Should have started a new thread, sorry but thought people interested in old tv might be interested in old Morse. I'm going on to watch the Lewis seasons. All fun and games round at my place.

I"ve been waiting ages for the Barnaby Rudge, previously you could only get it on an import box set. I'll probably check out the Dombey and Son in this batch but the early eighties one is very wooden. Some of these older productions have their charms but they don't half show much better television production values and (generally) acting is nowadays, things improving markedly through the nineties. There are no decent versions of A Tale of Two Cities and Hard Times either, the latter at least being worth a new adaptation. The novels that I'd most like to see adapted, though, are Gaskell's Mary Barton and Charlotte Bronte's Villette, both unaccountably MIA from screens for half a century.

Already have Rudge on the R1 set but have ordered the July ones and no doubt will pick up the August ones too.

Just a reminder that the final three of these classic adaptations are out next week : Barnaby Rudge, Bleak House and Oliver Twist
The first three were really very very good.
