Does anyone have it/has had it in the past? If so, is it worth it, would you say?
Confession: I'd want it mainly to get access to seats ahead of public booking for Kaufmann's Otello this summer, but would also be keen to snaffle decently priced seats for a lot more productions there, so I can build my opera knowledge/appreciation.
The chance of attending dress rehearsals is also a plus, but I'm not 100% sure you get that on £96 membership...?

You do get better seat availability with the priority booking. When I was a Friend at the level you mention you could get dress rehearsal tickets but bear in mind that they are popular and may be snapped up promptly! If opera or ballet were my main interest, I'd have remained a Friend because of the security of the priority booking period and the opportunity to apply to attend dress rehearsals.

Thanks HG. I am tempted, I must admit. Will probably wait until a bit nearer the next priority booking period opening - maybe mid Feb - to take it out and get better use out of it.

ROH membership has certainly helped me get better seats, although Jonas Kaufmann is always going to be a challenge - but you'll get far better options as a member.
Rather nicely this month, I got an email from the ROH telling me that thanks to my ongoing support, they temporarily upgraded me to the next Friends level for this booking period so I could book 24 hours before other Friends for this season. So got better seats for Núrnberg than I would have done if I'd been booking this morning.
It seems to me that the ROH looks after its Friends fairly well.

Yes, that is good - I've heard other people mention having the same deal in the past. Must pay off as I guess a fair number of people will like the experience and upgrade their membership.

Yes, I'm sure it wasn't coincidence that it happened the week after they'd sent my renewal notice with the usual suggestions that I upgrade my membership...

I was a Friend for many years and found the best value seats were the "Semi restricted views" at the sides of the stalls circle. The sound was good and most of the'big no's' are delivered from the front of the stage.
Last year I rejoined as a basic Friend and find there are now several levels and those seats are now snapped up before I can apply.
Am considering upgrading as renewal must be soon, but hoping to secure cheaper tickets. It's a strange world.

Funnily enough, when I sat there for Krol Roger, not only did I have a good view of the stage, I had the added bonus of meeting a lovely elderly gentleman to chat to. (And the further superb bonus of Mariusz Kwiecien taking his shirt off, but that's by the by, ahem). Bit of a nuisance if they're going to sell out even before Friends booking kicks in, though! They were the ones I sort of had my eye on. Next membership level up (£170) is a bit steep, given I know I might have to go to £200 for the Otello tickets (they're a 'big birthday' gift for someone)... |

I just have the basic membership and use it primarily for the rehearsal tickets and the occasional ballet. I agree about the semi-restricted stalls circle seats and they do sell out quickly.

How do the rehearsal tix work? Do you pay for those also? And are you only allowed to get rehearsal tickets for one or two shows per season, then that's your lot? (Not that I'm saying this is a bad deal - just that the wording on the ROH site isn't at all clear.)

I'm on the lowest level of membership and what that means is that initially when they go on sale I am entitled to 1 ticket and you do pay for them, but they are very discounted. I think they range from £5 to £21. They are usually in the amphitheatre but I've got stalls circle/balcony seats a couple of times - and once got moved to the Grand Tier- very nice. After a certain date if there are still tickets available you can buy more up to a total of 4 per booking period - so the last booking period I got 2 single tickets and 1 pair. They are usually during the day and rarely at weekends so if you work conventional 9-5 hours probably not a good bet. But for me, it means I'll try something that I wouldn't willing to fork out a lot of money for - some odd opera; seeing a different cast of a ballet I've seen before - that sort of thing. I also like the more casual atmosphere - people often bring sandwiches to eat on the terraces, no one dresses up.

Go to their webpage on tickets and there is a question on how much prices are for each show. It links to a seating plan colour coded and indexed for all shows.
