I used to Tweet her in her Sister Act days and she was lovely back then. Shame if she isn't enjoying it anymore. I've taken a break for the past year and a half but am slowly getting back into it. Anyway, back to The Color Purple, I'm not sure I'd want to see it again after the Menier production was so great and I have that as my last memory of it. Same- that production was as perfect an experience as I could hope for, so I decided against seeing it again in NY. (also to my mind the show itself isn't a favourite, for me it was John Doyle's direction that was the draw which personally I think was at it's best in that intimate space)

I think she just comes across a little bit like she's saving the world with her art. She takes herself rather seriously on Twitter when really everyone knows she should just concentrate on posting lovely photos of her boyfriend. With his shirt off.

Do you mean the Ramin Karimloo school of social media?

I would guess Cynthia would want a break from Colour Purple, she has been attached to the project nearly 3 years, so she wants a rest. Colour Purple, will not be coming back to the UK, think the producers are pushing She Loves Me more for a transfer.
Cynthia is a lovely person in real life, she is very hot property and will not need to work in the UK again, especially as she raised the profile of a poorly received musical to a Tony winning one, no mean feat!!!
She gets inundated by fans all the time, a nice problem to have.

She's doing a film with Viola Davies after Color Purple ends. I actually saw Color Purple last night. It was very well done, but for some reason I did not get that throat lump that I got when I saw at the Menier. But overall very slick, and the cast in top form with great singing. I was there that evening (December 7) as well. There was a UK gentleman seated in front of me with his cousin. I got a little teary - but not exceptional. I probably admired the production more than felt the story. But, I am beyond thrilled that I got to see Ms. Erivo just claim this role - nail this role - such that I don't think I'll ever think of it without thinking of her portrayal (even if I thought the standing ovation for the 11 O'Clock number was a bit much)

I'm so relieved to finally see this last night - a very slick, stripped bare production which I missed at the MCF. The theatre is beautifully intimate, which suits the show perfectly. Cynthia certainly does command the stage and the audience without even uttering a sound, she has stage presence in spades. Her voice hits you like a wave when she belts I'm Here, I feel so lucky to have witnessed it.
Holliday was off, so we had Rema Webb as Shug, but the whole cast did a tremendous job, especially Carrie as Sofia and Jenny as Nettie. A wonderful way to round off my year before Rent tomorrow, such a shame this is closing after one year.

This was my theatre-going highlight of last year - I was gutted to miss the Menier run a few years ago as I didn't live in London at the time and couldn't get to it, so I made sure it was top of my list for my NY trip and I wasn't disappointed. Cynthia is a star, not just her voice but her inhabiting of the role. I agree with whoever said she'll always come to mind when thinking of Celie, she was astounding.
I loved the whole production, the cast were universally excellent (including Rema Webb who was on for Shug, which meant I wasn't bothered about missing Heather) and I loved the staging. I was annoyed I didn't have time to see it twice, but maybe once was better as Cynthia's performance stuck with me for a long time even on just one viewing!
Sad it's closing tomorrow but I'm not surprised Cynthia wants to do something new. I doubt we'll see this back in London anytime soon - and I also sadly doubt we'll see Cynthia in anything this side of the pond for a while either while she deservedly makes the most of her success in NY.

The Color Purple facebook just livestreamed Cynthia's last I'm Here. She broke down with emotion twice in the middle but still absolutely smashed it - it's clear just how much this role means to her. What a privilege to watch, and what a wonderful idea whoever thought to stream it for those of us not lucky enough to be there! Video now available: www.facebook.com/ColorPurpleMusical/

Congratulations to Cynthia, Jennifer, Danielle and the music team for their Grammy win! With just one role, Cynthia is now halfway there for an EGOT!

Congratulations to Cynthia, Jennifer, Danielle and the music team for their Grammy win! With just one role, Cynthia is now halfway there for an EGOT! Yes, well deserved! Cynthia's performance with John Legend was stunning as well. Such a shame not all the soloists on winning musical theatre albums actually get Grammys, but at least Jennifer, Cynthia and Danielle have each got one - I had read some versions of the citation where Danielle had been left out!

They seem to change their mind every year. Last year for Hamilton even people like Oak, Jasmine Cephas Jones and Jonathan Groff won Grammys. Took three people in one go (Daveed, Leslie, Renee) halfway to EGOT.

Many an exception/favour appears to have been created for Hamilton (multiple performances on the one night at the Tonys, introduced by the President etc), but there you go. Consistency would be great but is all too rare (though I guess it comes down to personal preference too). Vaguely related to consistency, I see various tweets are now pointing out how the critics in London didn't give Cynthia any awards in years of performing here yet she goes to Broadway for a year and wins a Grammy and a Tony. Though I'm not sure TCP at the Menier was eligible for the Oliviers, was it? I suspect the result of all that is it'll have to be a really good, lead, West End part to bring Cynthia back to the West End from the US from now on though - shame for us that she won't be here more often!

Which shows would she have been eligible for? I Can't Sing and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg?? (I don't know how big her part was in the latter.)

I think the issue is more the Menier production not being eligible than anything else, I can't think of anything else she's done that would have been likely to be nominated if eligible.

Consistency would be great but is all too rare (though I guess it comes down to personal preference too). To be fair, they have had that rule before so it's not like they introduced it for Hamilton. But yes, they did seem to bring it back last year solely for the show. I couldn't care less about the Tonys stuff as it really was a monumental moment in musical theatre history, but the Grammys rule is annoying. I'm just glad Phillipa Soo has a Grammy. I think if today's rule had been in place it would have been just Lin and Leslie. Cynthia seems enamoured with America. I don't think she's ever coming back for longer than a few months at a time. She has even said on her Twitter how dire the West End is in comparison to Broadway and to be fair, I agree.

I agree, too. She has appeared in every single charity (and non-charity) function, gig, you name it. There's just a LOT more going on there for a happening Broadway performer in addition to their 8-shows a week routine.
I think anyone can see this. The Broadway area, roughly between 54th/Broadway to 42nd or so is just theatremania. Everything is theatre or catered around theatre. You hear it in the conversations everywhere you go. Even the businesses are catered for theatre goers, or for the theatre industry. Be it restaurants, shops, agents, lawyers, studios..you name it.
It becomes even ever so apparent on a Monday when most theatres are dark, and how the contrast is in terms of the traffic and movement on these streets.

She was so wasted as Shug imo and it seems to have put her off theatre for a while.
