The Arcola have excelled themselves, an entire new season without a single item of interest for me. Since ACE increased their funding they seem to have given up trying to programme anything popular.

From a quick read of their website, I assume you're talking about the next two months' programming. If so, it's mainly brief runs of visiting productions, drama school assessed shows and emerging theatre projects. They are all worth presenting but aren't intended to be "popular" in the sense of attracting large audiences to long runs.
In this period, there is one full run show which could prove to be popular. I saw the Theatre Royal Bath production of A Steady Rain in the Ustinov and found it to be one of those many USAn plays which has an unshakable air of talking down to its audience and trying hard to be liked by as many people as possible. It's the sort of two-hander that gets put on in the West End with star casting designed to attract USAn visitors and Londoners alike. The play left me cold and bored me but I sensed that it was like one of those movies which can completely engross you if you switch off all your critical faculties and submit yourself to the ride.

I used to love the Arcola - to the extent that I got through three of their ticket passports (5 tickets for £50) within a space of a couple of years, but I haven't been back for about a year.

I loved A Steady Rain on Broadway but that was mostly due to excellent performances by Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig (I may be a little biased here too). It's a play that needs great casting to be of interest to me.
