I never saw him on stage, but he was wonderful in so many memorable TV shows, and recently I’ve been listening to his beautifully read audiobooks of Anthony Trollope’s novels. Seemed like a decent bloke too!

Like you, I never saw him on stage, but he's been in my consciousness as an actor for most of my life. Thoughts with his family and friends.

Can’t help feeling for Prunella and wondering whether she’ll be aware of or understand what’s happened. The thought that he’s no longer around and she knows but doesn’t understand why is awful.

I have been listening to "I'm here I think, Where are you?" on Radio 4 - letters written to his wife whilst on tour. (Available for next 7 days on BBC Sounds). Very versatile actor and devoted husband.

I think possibly he's the only actor I've seen playing both Gloucester (which I think he played several times) and King Lear. Very good as both.

I only saw him once on stage - Caryl Churchill's "A Number" where he was joined in the cast by his son Sam. A few minutes after the curtain calls they overtook me walking towards London Bridge tube (the play was at the Menier) and they descended into it. Seemed quite an unassuming man.
Thoughts with Prunella, hard to see how she will cope with this loss. RIP.

I was thinking exactly the same. I never saw him on stage but have done on TV and also on the canal programme he did with Prunella. He also seemed such a decent man and did a lot to support the theatre. R.I.P.

He was lovely, very humble, a true gentleman and totally charming. Sad news indeed.

I met him once. We were on a canal holiday many many years ago and my father-in-law was having a chat to the couple on the next boat - totally unaware who it was. But that was because they were both unassuming, friendly, chatty boat people.

I was lucky enough to see him at Leeds Grand Theatre as Shylock in the 1980 Old Vic touring production of The Merchant of Venice. He was outstanding. I was only 16 at the time but his performance, as the great ones do, has stayed with me since..as has the play that played with Merchant in rep that week....Peter O'Toole's infamous production of Macbeth. O'Toole ad-libbed and corpsed throughout and I recall Brian Blessed was Banquo and Dudley Sutton was MacDuff!!!
Back to Timothy West..saw him too in Long Days Journey into Night in the early nineties. Brilliant in that too.
