I learned recently that theatres actually impose quite a heafty fine in the contract if there isn’t an interval. The theatre needs one, it’s essential and that money comes from the producer if it doesn’t come from the general public via drinks, snacks and merchandise.

There have been productions from the subsidised sector that didn't have intervals originally but which had one once they transferred to the West End for that reason.
